A Masterpiece from the first frame to the last

I just had the pleasure of seeing this film for the first time. I'm so impressed with it I'm actually upset I hadn't seen it sooner. I might have never known about it if I hadn't heard about it in the movie Summer School.

this film has flaws.

this film has flaws.

Such as?

reply

overdone comedy...plus David Naughton is mediocre.

reply

Such as the amount of times we have to listen to the "it wasn't a man that attacked us, it was some kind of animal!" conversation.

It got pretty stale after the 10th time or so.

Oh, and the nurse's willingness to shack up with a guy who was obviously teetering on the verge of total madness.

Now is the part where you come back and correct me and my stupid wrongness.

That's true, but it's hardly a flaw in a dark comedy/horror. If only we could get something this flawed to watch these days.

Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun!

reply

I don't disagree with that sentiment :)

WE'VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR STUPID WRONGNESS. THAT IS ALL.

reply

Such as David Naughton’s lack of an actual nutsack, resulting in the world’s first castrated werewolf, which apparently has a lot of appeal to Kappa boy-men. A weak protagonist in a film about the beast within is like making a porn film with no sex scenes.

reply

Only you would notice something so trivial but it also says something about your focus while watching a film.

reply

Agreed. Either get a real man, or point out the fact that this is just a boy with no balls.

reply

Every film has flaws.

~ I'm a 21st century man and I don't wanna be here.

reply

If every film has flaws, it almost seems pointless pointing them out.

reply

Not really. Have you seen underworld?

Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun!

reply

Indeed, good film, but it has some major flaws, far from a "masterpiece".

I have loved this film since my brother got me into it as a child - I can't tell you how excited I was a few years back when my partner and me found ourselves sat at a table next to the actor who played Gerald Bringlsey the subway victim at a beach cafe in Newquay :-) that man has been in my mind on every subway/tube I have been in during my lifetime :-)

reply

Great stuff! He also played Bib Fortuna in Return of The Jedi, Jabba The Hutt's right hand man.

I agree with the masterpiece from beginning to end, it's brilliant. The whole atmosphere of the film gets my heart pumping, especially during the opening East Protor scenes, the first attack, the nightmares, David's transformations and the Piccadilly chaos.

I live in Wales and I'm planning to visit Crickadarn, which was East Protor in the film. Can't wait!

reply

An absolute masterpiece. This film has no flaws, just claws.

reply

Good one.

reply

A Lycanthrope production. :) I've always loved this movie. It still has the best werewolf transformation ever. And the soundtrack is brilliant. A true 10/10 from me

Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun!

Then apparently you’ve never seen The Howling, which has the first live-action real time werewolf transformation; nor have you seen Werewolf: The Beast Within, which has what I think is the best digital transformation so far. In fact, I have ALWAYS questioned how many other werewolf movies the sycophants for this thing have seen. I don’t have the feeling it’s very many.

The Company of Wolves? Dog Soldiers? Blood and Chocolate? Silver Bullet? Hello?

reply

wow, i got the same vibe, i also wished i had come across it sooner, i just got it on an amazing dvd set, i love all the movie references which for some reason get the villagers to loosen up, considering the director and light beginning this got bloody and serious fast with shocking effect, it's quite dark and intriguing, you really feel terrible for this kid, it's quite a rich movie, but i really do wish i had come across it when i was a teen, the kid's girlfriend comes off as much more mature than him, maybe because she's got a british accent (yes i know that's not really an accent but proper english), or maybe because she's a nurse and he's a backpacker with an interests of horror flicks, the old movie references just keep coming throughout the movie, landis seem like quite the passionate moviemaker, and hardly surprising the movie features a great soundtrack (one amazingly opens the dvd menu). i love the look on the boys face as he takes his balloons, i'm guessing he couldn't keep a straight face and they kept it in the movie. frank oz, kermit and miss piggy were the only ones i recognised in the entire movie. end sure was abrupt and actually quite moving, the special effects are a riot, it's a real mix of great fun, neat effects, and horror. guaranteed to entertain.

god gave that angel to my soul,
to follow me along,
until time for her to step off,
part of the puzzle as i go,
now i got no one here to play with,
left with shallow surroundings.

reply

I love this movie but in no way shape or form is this a masterpiece.

reply

It's one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

reply

Definitely on my top 10 but when I think masterpiece, I think of something this is nearly perfect.

reply

I love it too, it's certainly a unique and odd blend of horror and humour, American and British humour and great lines.

reply

And yet somehow it works so well. The scary moments still seem scary.

reply

Agreed.

reply

This is certainly my favorite werewolf movie. I only watched it about a year ago. But I am just not that into werewolf movies in general. I also watched The Wolfman, the original, and The Howling. I would recommend them all but American Werewolf in London I think is the best.

reply

I would argue that The Howling is the best of the bunch. You definitely need to watch Dog Soldiers if you haven't yet. Bad Moon is decent, flawed but a good movie. Silver Bullet is good, Howl, Late Phases is cheesy but worth a watch :)
