Nudity?

Another poster had a question about the R rating. I could have sworn that the original theatrical release contained nudity in the two love scenes, a trademark of Bakshi's. I was disappointed that it seemed to have been edited out in the VHS release, but I can't find any reference to this editing anywhere on the web. In fact, my mother wasn't happy about my seeing it at the time because of the nudity (nor was she crazy about the animated nudity in "Heavy Metal").

Did I completely hallucinate this, or does anyone else remember it?

reply

AMERICAN POP has no nudity scenes. Everything is mostly implied. The film got an "R" rating for language and drug related scenes.
This movie rocks and it should be more remembered!

During the WWII montage there is a stripper, but she is wearing panties and twirling tassles covering her boobies. That I think is as bad as it gets. Certainly one of the tamest Bakshi movies in terms of sexuality.

(I love the film, I'm just saying. If your mother saw Fritz the Cat, which features a bunch of critters having a bathtub orgy, inter-species sex between Fritz and a big, bosomy, black crow, and spousal abuse between a rabbit and a hippopotomus, her head would probably explode)

reply

Yeah! FRITZ THE CAT has way more in terms of sexual stuff, but it's crude and certainly far removed from the type of animation AMERICAN POP has.

Nah, the language was pretty tame, it was the violence that probably gave it the R as well as the drug related scenes

On the dvd I know they cut the corn field scene where they were about to have sex.
I think they cut race jokes too.

reply

Did they also cut the scene where, he meets a woman he connects with and they stand in a room and their clothes start flying off of them?

reply

No such scene.

reply

Then they ruined the movie because there was something pure and perfect in that scene.

Do you mean when he's a clown; she takes off her shoes and stockings, and he takes off his outfit? It's not "flying off"; it's slow and tender and never gets to the point of nudity.

reply

No...there was a scene where he and his love (not the girl from Iowa) where they are staring in each others eyes and the clothes come off by themselves. It was fascinating and the scene really stuck in my head. I don't remember if the audience saw much of their bodies as the focus was on their eyes, their stance, and the dancing clothes. It's weird that I'm the only one remembering it.

I have the laserdisc and noticed that it was on Crackle; I watched about 1/2 hour of it the other night, but didn't finish. If I have time I'll watch more, but it's been a while since I've seen it (as I said - laserdisc).

reply

I picked up and watched the rest of it; I didn't see anything like what you described. The closest thing was the one where the kid (bad voice) dressed as a clown and took his clothes off as the stripper disrobed; I didn't see any other scene like it, nor did I see a place where that would have happened.
