I cant seem to find this info anywhere...

I came to the imdb looking for the same info. if you find out, please let me know. cheers.

I think that the version that appears in the movie is played by Peter Paul and Mary

I asked the same question 2 years ago and have yet to get a response. Its a shame I think alot of the versions of the songs in the movie are better than the originals. Too bad nobody knows where to find them

[deleted]

it is not Peter, Paul and Mary.
i have searched hi and low and no info exists.
we must need gov't clearance for this level of information access.

reply

Having not seen this movie in a hundred years,....all I can think of is how The Grateful Dead used to do it,...but I am sure that is not them in the movie. Circa 1981,....I'll check a few thing's and see if I can pin-point it down. Rock On!

reply

Folks,

It IS Peter Paul and Mary!
I Love this flick, I Love Peter Paul and Mary and i Love that song!
I have the original, and the PP&M version.
Joan Baez DID play the song as well.
I even have Clapton doing it live.

By far, the Peter Paul & Mary version captures the spirit of the time, i think.

**If you look in the film, when he's washing dishes in the bar, through the window you can see Peter Paul & Mary playing on the stage.

Im pretty sure thats it and all.

watching American Pop as a child is what lead me to a LOT of songs and music....
I ALWAYS LOVED that moment, with Don't Think Twice. I had to find it.

Listen to the Peter Paul & Mary version. Its on most of their greatest hits CDs.

ROCK ON,

Sam

The version on the bus where Tony writes the song is not Peter, Paul and Mary...that version is sung by a female and its also not Joan Baez for its too slow. The song is up beat and with a female singer.

There isn't a soundtrack out for this movie so no need trying to find it.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Been lookin' for this cover of "Don't Think Twice" for ten years.

It is definitely NOT Peter, Paul, and Mary.

However, while searching, I have found a beautiful version by a woman
named Karin Blaine. Album: "Dirty Money" (released 2003 Dudessdahlia records)

Enjoy!

If anybody's still interested, the woman who sang this version (as well as all songs sung by Frankie) is Marcy Levy AKA Marcella Detroit, best known as one half of the pop group Shakespears Sister and being on the Eric Clapton Band in the 70's. You can find Somebody To Love sung by her on the soundtrack of this film, but not the other songs she sings on the movie.

reply

Finally! Thank you, TL. But how did you find out? And do you know of anyway of getting a copy?

reply

I've always been a fan of Marcella ever since i heard her great vocals on Shakespears Sister biggest hit, Stay (a #1 hit for 8 consecutive weeks in the UK in 1992). There's this great site that has a very comprehensive discography of her solo work, that's how i found out: http://mdevery.customer.netspace.net.au/mdetroit.html

The soundtrack is on ebay quite often, so you can find it there easily. It was only released on LP though. I have Somebody To Love as an mp3 so if anybody wants it just send an email :)

I don't know if she ever recorded Don't think twice fully or just that excerpt, but it was never released anyway. You can ask her sending her an email, she usually answers so try that. Her website is http://www.marcelladetroit.com

I think I found an answer. There were several groups that covered Dont Think Twice, and I think PP&M might have, but I think the group everyone is confusing them with is The Seekers. Two guys (guitars) and female singer. They were from Australia, and did a lot of folk music like PP&M were doing in the early to mid 60's. Does anyone remember Georgy Girl?
That was them.

reply

Grateful Dead have never played Don't Think Twice It's Alright. You are confusing it with another Dylan song maybe?
Baby Blue possibly?

Hi there!

I am friends with Ron Thompson, the man who plays "Tony" and "Pete" in American Pop. I was listening to a radio interview he'd asked me to hear, and I've just asked him who it was that sang the song in the movie. I'd asked was it Mews Smalls who'd sang the song. Here's our conversation (via Facebook Message):

Me: Ron, did Mews do her own vocals for the songs in American Pop, or was it someone else that sings for her?
And for that matter, did YOU do your own vocals for the songs sung in the movie?

Ron: Someone else . It was the original artist .

Me: (not talking about the original singers of the songs, the other songs not sung by the original artists)

Ron: no , Bob Segar ..
don't know what you mean

Me: I knew that was Bob Seeger singing Night Moves...
People are speculating about who sang Bob Dylan's "dOn't Think Twice, It's Alright" in teh scene you r character is on the bus writing the song. People are wondering who is the woman singing the song...
Sorry for the typos LOL

Ron: don't know . not Mews . Maybe a studio singer . A young guy was singing some of Pete's at the end .
