After a couple of weeks of filming, the director and executives at Universal felt Eichorn lacked the comic ability to bring the character of Cheryl to life. In fairness to Eichorn, the role is underwritten, but Streisand, by virtue of her screen presence and comic flair, made the character much more compelling than she would have been in the hands of a lesser actress.

From what I've heard it has nothing to do with Eichorn, but with the way things are in Hollywood. The director was married to Sue Mengers, who was Barbra Streisand's agent. And a couple of weeks into shooting, the studio found out that Streisand was interested. So at great expense (I think the budget tripled), they stopped production, dumped Eichorn and basically ruined the movie by miscasting Streisand.

^Miscasting Streisand? She was the film's only saving grace

There's nothing wrong with playing against type. Actors do it all the time. If she weren't in this film it would still be horrible

What was so against type about the role? I'd say NUTS and owl and pussycat were more against type for Babs

I see you left oht NUTS, where she was SEVERELY flawed. She was ALSO weak in The Mirror has two faces.

So, now you're saying THESE DAYS people will? You didn't say that earlier. You said they "WON'T play weak and they WON'T play flawed". I'm not trying to fight I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from. Yes, she may have broken a record for that time but since it wasn't something she hadn't played before maybe that's what got her interest first. When she first looked at the script, if the story above is true, she wasn't sent an offer with the script. She read it, liked it, for some strange reason, and negotiated her salary.
