Forgotten Masterpiece

An eight part series originally broadcast in 1981, this is the forgotten masterpiece of British television. Robert Hardy is mesmerizing as Churchill, but there are also outstanding performances from Edward Woodward,(Sir Samuel Hoare),Peter Barkworth (Stanley Baldwin), and Eric Porter (Neville Chamberlain). The series documents, in accurate and precise detail, a pivotal moment in the history of the 20th century. It grips you from the first frame to the last. Available on DVD, the lavish production standards are not done justice by the extremely poor quality of the transfer. The film series demands a complete restoration, a frame-by-frame remastering which is as vital as it is necessary. It should be compulsory viewing in schools, for all time. I cannot find enough superlatives to recommend it.

I agree fully - except that I haven't seen the DVD transfer. (I've simply watched videocassettes taped from the television presentation).

What a shame if something this magnificent - doesn't have a good DVD series for it. It deserves it.

And I really have no complaint at all - it would have been nice to have lots of extras (there are none except filmographies of the actors) but the picture and sound quality seem just perfect to me.

What a joy to see it!

One of the commenters complains that distributor Lance Entertainment is poor quality dvd. My local library has a dvd of WC: the Wilderness Years distributed by Koch Vision which I believe has a good reputation in the dvd-transfer industry?

As you are satisfied with the quality of your dvd would you mind sharing the distributor of your version? Thanks.

Subtitles would have been a great help!
