I finally found it!!!!

I have been looking for a copy of this for about 2 years now.
Have looked everywhere on the net and seemed only to find vhs copies for AU$70-300 on ebay, and thought I'd have to wait a lot longer.
I went to get some DVD's today and was having a look in the Australian section, and there on the top shelf was A Town Like Alice!!!
Couldn't believe my eyes and drove home on a bubble and couldn't wait to put it on.
Still watching it- it runs for about 5 hours. Going to see if I can buy this copy off them when I take it back- or get them to order me one in!

Congratulations!!!!!
Can you let me know who has released it so that I can lobby them to release it UK.

reply

I think they said it was released by a company called Interactive, but didn't hear her properly. I can find out more when I take it back. Would you be interested in buying a copy through me? I could post it out there for you. Would probably be around 5 pounds for postage and then around 10-15 pounds for the dvd.
I'll find out how much the dvd is when I take it back as I will be buying a copy.

Hi Mara,
I still haven't found out anymore details- the video store hasn't gotten back to me yet, and I havent chased it up either, had around $700 bills in the last 3 months or so :/
You could try ringing Civic Video in Busselton- hey I'll even get you the number. They might be able to get it in for you and then post it out. Anyway, you can only ask :)

If you live in the US, it's available on VHS on Amazon thru their dealers for a little as $9..this 5 hour series is so much better than the film with Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch and tell the complete story..5 hours, in color with a wonderful cast..Helen Morse, Bryan Brown and Gordon Jackson..the filming locations are authentic Malaysia, Australian outback and London.

Not to be missed!!

"If you can make a girl laugh, you can make her do anything!"....

Did you find out anything more about this DVD? I also have a mother with a particular interest for this version of the film. :-) If you had any success, I could try calling the Civic Video store also. I live in Norway, but I guess you in Australia use the same PAL system as we do?

I see that it's available at
http://www.nostalgiafilms.com/tolial19dvdt.html

Only 14.99 USD plus shipping. I don't know anything about this company, butfor that price, I'll risk it. THis is such a beautiful story and terrific production.

They say they ship free in the US, 2.99 to Canada, 5.99 everywhere else in the world.

I tried the link and it was dead. Did you ever get yours?

Hi - I've also been looking for a copy of this series for months, I remembered it from when I was a romantic teenager.

If you're still after a copy, I ordered it off the ioffer trading web site last week. It came within 3 days and I watched it this past weekend! It looks to have been copied onto DVD from VHS but it's been done well and is very watchable. There were numerous listings for sale, take a look.

I've bought a DVD version and it plays on our DVD here in the UK. I must confess it cost me a fortune (about £78 delivered), but in truth it was worth it. All 5 splendid hours of it, worth every penny!

Darren ([email protected]) in Australia sent it just before Christmas and it only took about 5 days, he even sent a bonus DVD of another Auzzie mini series. Not watched that one yet but it was a nice touch.

They obviously record the American VHS Tape that you can still get on Amazon US to DVD. The copy especially at the start it a bit rough but it settles down. You forget just how rough VHS was.

But I have it, it's as wonderful as I remember and is fabulously true to the book which is one of my all time favourites.

I searched using Australian Google it lead me to them and I can't fault the service.

If only someone would read all these notice boards and digitally remaster then I'd be truly happy.

PS: If you buy it perhaps you can tell Darren you heard it from me, then I could ask for "All the rivers run" at a discount.

Joes Classic movies sells an all regions copy for 16.50 American.

reply

I just wanted to say "thank you". I bought the "copied from VHS" version last year and was so excited to watch it again (despite the grainy nature). If this really is the quality copy that Joes Classic Movies says it is (and region-free too - hurrah!), then I'm going to be beside myself with joy. Clearly I was a very impressionable teenager when it first came out! Thanks again.

I just found this... is it the only place to buy it online?? I am also from norway, and have only seen it on amazon on VHS

THANKS SO MUCH! I've waited many yrs for this to get onto DVD : >) : >

Have you bought it? What's the quality like?

reply

I suspect that these DVD's are pirate.
I've Google Earthed the address of the company TV-Nostalgia & it's a residential housing estate

reply

Thanks for doing the google check nanna! no i hadn't bot it yet. That website looked OK, but didn't have the spare funds. but you're probably right, it might be bootlegged. otherwise, we'd be able to buy it at amazon.

Can't wait till it eventually does get manufactured commercially tho. I bot the VHS 20 yrs ago & watched it religiously once a yr during my summer breaks. but i finally retired the tapes & player to the attic a few yrs back & now i miss it!! Also, it was one of the few exceptions where the film was better than the book. imo the book was bland in comparison.

I'll never forget the 1st time i saw this on PBS. my whole life was scheduled around watching this. and there were no vcr's to record it, so it was so important to see it! Anyway, it had such an impact, not knowing the ending....the cliffhangers!!! i loved how the story unfolded!

by the time i bot the tapes, i realized its case(the artwork on the cover) was a spoiler. so when i lent it out to a few friends, i took it out of the jacket so they wouldn't be able to figure out the ending, & ruin the surprises! : >) : >

I was so hopeful. I really want a DVD version, legally, of this that will play in my region (USA).

reply

I am totally mystified why it has not been released LEGALLY on DVD.

Have you bought the dvd? What's the quality like?

reply

Here in the USA it's only available legally (try Amazon) on VHS in 3 different versions, A single tape EP speed by Starmaker, a 2 tape SP speed by Starmaker & a 3 tape SP speed by Anchor Bay. Good luck finding your copy. The single tape EP version is the most common out there...

I recently obtained a VHS copy from Amazon. The quality was better than I expected. Have just spent a blissful weekend re-watching it.

It's currently on sale at numerous on-line stores. I am going to order it today. I have gotten several obscure but beloved movies on line in DVD. They copy from the VHS versions and the quality is at least as good as the old VHS copies.
