REMAKE THIS FILM!!

This book NEEDS remade in to another film. I can see it now: Hugh Jackman as Joe. Not sure who would be a good Jean though.

Kate Winslet

Why remake? How could you possibly improve on this version? Just look at what happened when Brideshead Revisited was remade. We got an abomination.

This is a fantastic version, but it DOES have some faults.

The biggest, IMO, is that Noel Strachan is too young. In the book, he is meant to be elderly, old enough to be Jean's father (or grandfather!). Whilst he secretly loves Jean (wishing he'd met her forty years previously), we're never meant to see him as a rival to Joe. The mini-series sees him rushing to Australia to bring Jean back home, but this never happens in the book. In fact, he doesn't visit Australia until well after Jean's marriage.

The other thing that niggles me is the row that Jean and Joe have during their engagement. Pure fabrication.

Still, as I said, an otherwise terrific adaptation.

I've got the book and the film, not the mini-series [see if I can download it] I can't remember a tiff in the book at all.
I love the film and the book.
Going off-board which I don't like doing, I have just come back from a week in Barcelona and my reading matter was "Rebecca" quite a weird story.
