Whatever Happened?

If anyone loves Tenko as much as I do you will also love the actresses that have expressed and explored there given characters in such a way that is immensely gratifying to themselves.

I am interested in what has happened to the following actresses but particularly Ann Bell who plays Marion Jefferson, the British internees leader. This is due to her being born in Wallasey on the Wirral near Liverpool and I growing up in Bromborough and Tranmere on the Wirral and would be interested in writing to her fanbase to see her input on Wirral life as well as hearing about her times on Tenko.

The only actresses from this great TV Drama that I still hear of being in the limelight are Stephanie Beacham (Rose Millar), Louise Jameson (Blanche Simmons) and Stephanie Cole (Dr. Beatrice Mason)

So if you have fan mail addresses for the following actresses i would be sincerely greatful:

Ann Bell (Marion Jefferson)
Joanna Hole (Sally Markham)
Veronica Roberts (Dorothy Bennett)
Claire Oberman (Kate Norris)
Jeananne Crowley (Nellie Keane)
Elizabeth Chambers (Mrs. Domenica Van Meyer)

Also, does anyone know if Renee Asherson (Sylvia Ashburton) is still alive? The page for her says she was born in 1920. I hope she is as tough as old boots in real life just like her amazingly portrayed character of Sylvia and is still acting as well as alive.

It is upsetting that such great actresses like Patricia Lawrence (Sister Ulrica) and Jean Alexander (Joss Holbrook) have passed on they were such a credit to the series and expressed their roles amazingly.

Again, any information would be greatfully recieved.

Mike.

Most of the actresses from "Tenko" are still working a lot in major TV and theatre roles (most notably Stephanie Cole, Louise Jameson and Stephanie Beacham), but some of them (Ann Bell, Veronica Roberts, Elizabeth Chambers etc)
are still working but keep a lower profile.

Since these actresses are still working, you will find contact details for them on the Spotlight casting directory website.

Renee Asherson is now 87 years old, but hasn't appeared on screen for a few years now (I'm guessing she has retired but don't know for sure).

Also of note, last year on Channel 4's The Paul O' Grady Show, there was a reunion of some of the cast members (Ann Bell, Stephanie Cole, Stephanie Beacham, Louise Jameson, Burt Kwouk and Josephine Welcome).

I agree that it's such a shame that Patricia Lawrence died aged 68, but remember Jean Anderson was 94 when she died, so she had a good innings, as they say.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much again

Hi, Mike, I've also been trying to find out more about Ann Bell, whose performance in Tenko was so magnificent. She seems to be one of those British actors who do a great deal of work on British TV series that seldom make it to American screens. You can catch her in the remake of Forsyte Saga, which features some great performances, despite being a pathetically pale imitation of the original series. Likewise, she can be found in Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery shows such as Christabel, Ice House and Woman in White (the 1997 version). I would love to see more of her work. Apparently, she did a guest spot on Waking the Dead in the past year or so. That show airs on BBC America, so you could catch her there. There seems to be little or no biographical info about her. I find that so maddeningly typical of so many of my favorite Brit actors. In some ways, I think that's what makes these actors so appealing. They are not spending all their energies being media darlings, so they disappear into all their roles. I remember watching the episodes on PBS when it first aired in the 80s. I purchased the whole series in the British DVDs and watch it every few months. It never fails to keep me riveted.

I'll keep looking for info about the other performers. I do remember seeing Jeananne Crowley in The Real Charlotte on PBS. Jeananne Crowley did many other projects that have appeared on PBS, such as Reilly, Ace of Spies. You can check out her list of credits on her imdb page, then rent or purchase the DVDs. She's done some really fine work over the years. Claire Oberman made a small, but memorable appearance in Fortunes of War, a fantastic series starring Branagh and Thompson before they were married. Definitely worth a gander. There's a bit more info about some of the actors you listed if you follow links from the Wikipedia Tenko article, including some sad news concerning Ann Bell's husband, the great character actor Robert Lang, who played Teddy Forster-Brown, Domenica Van Meyer's second hubby in the Tenko Reunion movie. Lang died of cancer in 2004. Perhaps that's another reason Bell keeps a low-profile in her personal life. Several of these women have done Waking the Dead episodes, so you could see them on BBC America or by renting the DVDs. Elizabeth Chambers had a small role in Spooks (MI-5) during season 2. Follow each actress's individual links from imdb to see if you find their appearances that way. Sorry if I'm stating the bleeding obvious, but sometimes people overlook these things. Happy searching!

I have contacted a lot of Tenko cast, and they all love the show. Go to spotlightcd.com, and search for agents' addresses in the box on the top left.

I saw Ann Bell in The Bill, a couple of years back. She was married to the actor who played Teddy in tenko Reunion (apologies but his name escapes me).

Joanna Hole is still acting. I can't name anything she has done recently, but she was brilliant in a 1980s Miss Marple.

Veronica Roberts was in a Midsomer Murders recently.

Claire Oberman is also still about. Can't name anything she has done lately, but she was great fun in Fortunes of War.

Jeananne Crowley now lives in Ireland. Don't know if she's still acting.

Elizabeth Chambers is married to Ken Riddington, who was Tenko's producer or director (can't remember which).

Renee Asherson is still about. She was in The Others, with Nicole Kidman. She's 90ish, but still going.

I have met both Stephanies in the last year, and have mentioned Tenko to both of them. they were both delighted to talk about the show.

The real mystery is Emily Bolton. Are you there, Emily?!?!

And of course Stephanie Beacham came 5th in the last Celebrity Big Brother.

Stephanie Cole is in Coronation Street now, effectively playing an elderly, working-class version of Bea. She's great. Josephine Welcome has a recurring minor role in Coronation Street as well, but it's not a particularly challenging part.
