why was Brainy Papa Smurfs assistant?

He was not as smart as he thought he was. Aside from being annoying, he was selfish, careless, and self-centered. He was anything but "Brainy". Handy or Hefty seemed more like assistants to me. Both had their heads on straight, and were more mature than the other surfs. Brainy was too much of a tool

Maybe Papa wanted to keep an eye on him.

I'm pretty sure Brainy only appointed himself Papa's assistant, I don't think it was "official." He also thought he was in line to be the next Papa Smurf, when it was apparent (and Papa even said in Grandpa's first episode) that the next Papa Smurf would be Baby.

Maybe because he's the only Smurf that took the initiative to do so, everyone else has their own interests, his was to be the next Papa, he's the only one who really experiments with magic...granted it obviously takes centuries to master, but some of his experiments, like Tailor's magic needle & the monster formula/antidote for Spook-a-Smurf day, have worked.

Really, you are too hard on Brainy Smurf.
Even if you feel that he's annoying, it is not like he can help that he was born with a lack of social skills.
He was the one, who became Wild Smurf's tutor.
So he must have some smarts, which can be used for good.

And as for Brainy being Papa Smurf's assistant, he is the only one in his generation to want that position.
So then, it was only natural that he also would get it.
There wouldn't be much else for someone with his personality to do in the tiny Smurf village anyway.

Also, in the "Magic Flute" movie, Papa chose Brainy as one of his only three companions.
So he must have valued him greatly.

Brainy Smurf fancies himself as the all-around-brain of the village. Although he acts as though he is second-in-command behind Papa Smurf, this is not the case and even Papa Smurf does not seem very fond of his sanctimonious attitude. In fact he could be considered as the class swot or know-it-all. He is a smurf that can be distinguished from the others because he wears thick glasses as he is extremely short-sighted. In fact, in the original Belgian version, he is called "Smurf with Glasses".

Conveniently, you leave out all of Brainy's positive attributes and accomplishments.

On the plus side, there are times when Brainy's warnings to the other Smurfs should have been needed: in Le Voleur de Schtroumpfs ("The Smurfnapper"), published in 1959 and Le Jardin des Schtroumpfs ("The Garden of the Smurfs") in 1982, Smurfs fall into traps set by their enemy Gargamel after ignoring Brainy's warnings of caution. Fortunately he is able to warn the other Smurfs and they gang up, defeat the rotten sorcerer and free the prisoners.

Smurfs Wiki has more.

His heart, however, is always in the right spot; in the "The Smurfs And The Book That Tells Everything" adventure he uses The Book That Tells Everything to benefit the others and when - thanks to a dam break - he and Baby Smurf were stranded on a little sliver of land in the torrent. Brainy asked the book for help and it responded by telling him that it was too important and that he should give up Baby. Enraged by that prospect, Brainy tossed the book into the river before grabbing Baby and swimming to the shore.

In the comic book version of "King Smurf", Brainy was also the first to protest against the jailing of Jokey Smurf, saying to the others that good old fashioned reasoning would show King Smurf the error in jailing Jokey. He went into the castle and started a lecture about how humor shouldn't be considered a crime and that there really was no reason for Jokey to be jailed and that he and the other Smurfs with him didn't agree with the jailing...which led to Brainy being thrown out of the castle and the other Smurfs deciding that a good old fashioned riot would work far better than reasoning.

In the comics, Brainy is also very close with Wild Smurf for whom he has put himself forwards as a mentor figure, trying to teach him how to behave like a proper Smurf. To his credit, Brainy succeeds in teaching Wild Smurf to talk (somewhat) normally and when it becomes clear that Wild Smurf doesn't want to wear normal Smurf clothing, he doesn't press the issue. As a result Brainy and Wild Smurf have a mutual understanding and respect for each other.

Because he clearly WAS smarter than the others. The only reason he screwed up was because he still had to learn things, which Papa Smurf refused him to teach for some reason. If anyone's annoying, it's you.
