Gargamel a jew?
Gargamel looks like a jew doesn't he? There were some people who thought it was a bit antisemitical. There were also rumours about satanic and communism (papa smurf). Check wikipedia. What do you guys think of that?

What do I think? It's a children's cartoon--no more, no less. Don't overanalyze everything.
That's all bunk and you know it. It's a cute children's cartoon and that's all it's meant to be. Just because Gargamel was voiced by a Jew (Paul Winchell was Jewish) doesn't mean the character was. If anything Gargamel was probably French or British because the Smurfs take place somewhere in Europe, most likely France or England.
shareIt takes place in midaeval Flanders, known today as Belgium.
shareYeah, I just realized as of late that it was probably Belgium that it took place in. That would explain why there is a French influence throughout.
Any idea of a time frame? I'm thinking late 1400s or early 1500s?

They weren't particularly specific in regards to time frame. It's meant to be a fairy tale (sort of), so the episodes would have been in the same era as the Grimm or Andersen stories.
shareI read somewhere that "Gargamel" and "Azrael" (or however you spell his cat's name) were actual names of demons and used in witchcraft

Where did you read that? It's probably one of those crappy hoaxes. Don't believe everything you read if it doesn't come from a reliable source.
shareAzrael WAS a demon in like the Holy Bible or something. I can't recall ever hearing about him in there when I read it as a kid - I was a religion freak back then, now I'm all heavy metal and death metal, and all kinds of bad things. As for Gargamel, I'm not sure.
shareAzrael was not a demon. Azrael is one of the names used for the Angel of Death in the Qur'an.

Some things have to be believed to be seen.
I think the only 'demon' mentioned in the Holy Bible is 'Lilith the Night Demon'. Oh, and we can't forget Lucifer, who himself was a demon. Those seem to be the only two mentioned by name. If I'm wrong, someone please step up and tell me.
shareI believe there was a demon named Legion in the New Testament. This might help. I'm not sure if they're all in the Bible, but they are listed here, noted in parentheses as belonging to "Christian Demonology".
shareThat's so weird, they're talking about the exact same thing in the Mel Gibson message boards.
shareit's stupid.
great show
Wow looking at posts on these message boards people read alot of weird political and religious symbolism into them. Kinda makes you wonder what all these people thought of the show as children!
shareTo Smurf, or not to Smurf.. That's a SMURF!
shareIt's all good and fun as far as I'm concerned.
Smurfette is a slut.... Smurfs are about communism.... Sassette sucks .... Gargamel's face looks jewish...
It's fun to read these threads.
The only real thing that this show teachs is the difference between good and evil, just like all cartoons. The message is so simple that kids "get" it.

Anyone on this message board that dares to claim that the villian wizard Gargamel is a jew has a few screws loose in thier heads! I have carefully watched that show since DVDs have came out and there is nothing jewish in his house or about him! Whoever is writing that stuff on that wikipedia website needs to be taken off of that site becuase they are telling a bunch of false things.
shareHe wants to cook smurfs to get gold out of them. Need any more evidence?
shareThat is not a reason to call him jewish!!!
Listen Gargamel is a sorcerer who can cast evil spells. In several stories i have read there are people who are shown as either followers of Budda or Islam that want to get their hands on gold. One thing to prove that i am right on saying that Gargamel is not a jew he does not celebrate any of the jewish holidays like the one where they light that thing that has places for eight or nine candles. So anyone who dares to call Gargamel a jew and insult the Jewish people are going to be sorry when they die and face GOD because The Jews are GOD's chosen people and it just so happens that the true Messiah Jesus Christ was born a Jew!
Would Smurfs be kosher?
