Why was Gargamel after the Smurfs in the first place?

I could have sworn he said in one episode that there was a potion he wanted to make in which a few Smurfs were needed. But I was a kid then so I dont remember. Could someone refresh my memory?

Thanks in advance

In the original comic books, gargamel need a smurf to make a Philosopher's stone.

Do they ever talk about that in the cartoon?

Mostly, didn't he and Asrael want to eat the Smurfs?

Glove slap, baby, glove slap!
Glove slap, I don't take crap!

The Comic motive is correct

As far as the cartoon, let's just remember than in the HB world, sometimes continuity means a lot.......sometimes continuity doesn't mean ****.

Throughout the series it has changed back and forth between the following
1. Smurfs are needed for a potion
2. Smurfs can be turned into gold
3. Smurfs are to be eaten
4. Gargamel just hated them for being happy

I refuse to argue on IMDB until the general populous actually uses their brains

It was never consistent, even in the comics. His original motive in the comics was using a smurf to make a philosopher's stone, which turns lead into gold, but he also tried to cook them several times. He also wanted to destroy them because they always got the better of him.
