Rick or AJ?

Favorite brother, anyone? They're both so funny and make such a great team, it's hard to choose, but...

My favorite is Rick cuz he's the "shady outlaw" type (besides, he's just so cute!) How 'bout you?

reply

they're both cool...that's why the show worked so well...didn't care for the mother much, though.

reply

Really? I thought their mother was funny - in her own way, of course, but funny.

reply

I am a RICK fan. But how could you say that about the mother. Could you not see where the guys get there stubbornness from. She absolutely perfect for the part. Just out of curiosity, who would you prefer for the part (now or then)?

reply

I just love the "chemistry" - for lack of a better term - between the two brothers. They really balance each other out well. You're right; they're both so funny in their own way. It was just one of those teams that worked.

reply

some dont understand the mother being in there. but i thinik it worked great. aj and rick needed some to get in thert kick them back into play once in awhile.

Yeah, I think that's exactly right. They're like the yin and yang of 80s television.

reply

They both make a really great team...but Rick Simon will be my favourite forever ! Maybe because he is an "outlaw" type. But for sure because he is such a great looking guy...wearing his very special kind of clothes, that hat, that moustache. What a great looking man ! I also like his background

reply

AJ, he's the sensible one. And very cute too.

I loved the brotherliness of the brothers but charmer AJ was my favorite. I was into the preppy look at the time. AJ was also the sensible one. He had a real house, a nice car, and more self-control than Rick. Their personalities played off each other nicely. Yet both of them had lots in common.

reply

Hard choice, but I'll go with AJ. I've been watching reruns on Hulu.com recently. I had a huge crush on both of them in the show's heyday.

I try doing this with my posts

You're right, they were so great together, but hands down....Rick. I've had a crush on Gerald McRaney ever since. Tough but sweet. AJ was nice, too...don't want to come across as if I'm dissing you Jameson, but someone on this thread has to root for the older brother!

reply

Hey JKMerengue, here is another one voting for "the older brother" !

reply

Gonna have to go with Rick. AJ is good looking and very nice, but I guess I prefer the more laid back, someone who isn't so perfect, kind of guy.

I've been watching this (up to Season 3) on Netflix lately... Why don't they have shows like this on TV anymore?

reply

Definitely AJ for me. I didn't care much for Rick.
I wasn't alive when the show was on air but I use to watch reruns on Sleuth and I had the biggest crush on AJ.

AJ. Not because the actor is pretty, generally I'm not much for blonds for one thing (er, I have a couple of cousins who both looked quite a bit like that when young, and we do not get along particularly well - yep, not fond of blonds), but because of the type of character he is. I like it when those character types who usually end up in supporting roles get a more prominent one, and the way AJ is presented I'd say he is definitely more one of the usual supporting characters instead of one of the normal protagonist ones - at least as they are have been played for the last five or six decades - and more so, one of those who in war movies or the darker actioners usually gets killed at some point. The 'good man', the likable, straight-laced guy whom the more shady main character likes, and whose death (possibly because he tries to do what the hero refused to do) may be one of the main reasons for the hero to start on his journey. Rick is much more the normal hero, so it is quite nice to see him paired with a character type who more often ends up as the sacrificial lamb on an equal partnership. And just nice to see the 'nice guy' as one of the heroes.

Although I have to admit I also like the fact that AJ wasn't written as a complete white knight. He does seem to be quite willing to break the rules at times, seems to be make a pretty good con man when needed and it is hinted that he can get angry enough that he might murder somebody if provoked badly enough. So there is a dark side to him, even if it is not very prominent, at least not when compared to Rick.

Both were awesome, but I say AJ.

I adore Rick (he's a hoot), but I adore AJ a little bit more.

It's his personality. He is sweet, thoughtful, devoted to his brother no matter how much Rick gets on his nerves, patient (how many times did he ask Rick to get his boat out of his yard? Did Rick ever get the boat out of the yard?), kind. He's responsible but likes to have a little excitement in his life. He's also a liar, a con artist and as accomplished at breaking in as a burglar, but he acts that way mostly when doing his job. He seems pretty honest when not lying to do his job. Despite his skills as a con artist and his age, he sometimes comes across as wide eyed. I'm doing a rewatch and I wonder how he can still be wide eyed about some things. He's also hot. He was cute during the first few seasons but he seemed to get hotter as he got older, and I usually don't go for blondes. I just adore him.

AJ is so cute that he's obviously the one that carries the show. Were Jameson
Parker not in the show, I'd not be watching any of it.
