Frequent costars

I think it's fun to look at how people work together on more than one series.

Season 4's 'The Dark Side of the Street' has Shanna Reed in it. She would go on to play Mac's wife in Major Dad. She also guest-starred on his other series Promised Land.

Mac's real-life wife Delta Burke guest-starred in a season 7 episode called 'Desperately Seeking Dacody.' He then guest-starred on her series Designing Women. And she later appeared with him in an episode of Promised Land.

I'm sure there are plenty more examples...

Jameson Parker and Darleen Carr have worked together a lot, beginning (I think) as far back as 1976. They eventually got married in the nineties. She did maybe half a dozen episodes of S&S.

Come to think of it, he worked with his prior wife, Bonnie Parker, on a number of projects as well, including various episodes of S&S. It's often the bad guys who really recur though, in any number of roles and series, because they tend to be played by character actors rather than "names".

Inevitably, most people will have worked more with Gerald McRaney, since he's had the longer career. It amuses me a little that, having worked with Lance LeGault on both S&S and "Major Dad", and with William Lucking on several episodes of S&S, he then went on to feature in the recent movie version of "The A-Team". Maybe if they'd all teamed up, instead of going at it separately, they'd actually have caught the team! ;)

I agree that the character actors who play bad guys usually recur throughout various series. This is especially true in crime dramas where their trademark villainy may be in greater demand with the casting offices.

Some actresses never had regular roles on series-- or at least not on series that lasted very long-- so they turn up frequently. Gals such as Cassie Yates, Belinda Montgomery and Lenore Kasdorf appeared on a lot of these types of shows.

In Mac's case, his series were quite different-- Simon & Simon was a detective show, Major Dad was a sitcom, Promised Land was a family drama and Jericho was a post-apocalyptic drama. So it's interesting that some of the same people join him in those other genres. Maybe on the later programs where he had considerable behind-the-scenes power, he was hiring his buddies, whether or not they fit those roles or types of storytelling.

Looking at their respective credits, I just noticed that Mac and Delta did a TV movie together in 1991. It was the first thing she did after she left Designing Women. They costarred and he directed.

Before Eric Server guested 4 times on Simon & Simon, he and McRaney appeared in the same episodes of various shows, although not always together. They did The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco and The Incredible Hulk. TSOSF episode also had Darleen Carr.

Some of these performers probably have the same representation (agents)...or else they have come up through the studio's training programs together. Long after the other major studios stopped using the old star system, Universal continued the practice well into the 80s. And I'd say Harvey Weinstein sort of brought it back in the 90s, though slightly modified.
