Probably not a surprise seeing how large people tend to die sooner because of the extra weight they have to live with but look at all the personalities John Candy impersonated and I seem to recall only Pavarotti is still alive (he IS still alive isn't he? )
Divine, Orson Welles, James Coco, Marlon Brando - all gone
Oh yes the "Fantasy Island" sketch is on Set 1 I believe. Great stuff.
Actually I thought of one person that he impersonated that is still alive (besides Pavoratti). Tom Bosley from "Happy Days". John did him in the "Bad Acting in Hollywood" sketch.
My god, that skit was so funny it's burned into my brain. I clearly remember Eugene Levy as Mr. Rourke and John Candy as "Patoo" speaking in a hilariously high-pitched voice. The cameras miniaturized him and he was standing on a stool or something. I haven't seen this show in twenty years but I remember this hilarious skit.
He did a sketch impersonating Elvis Presley in the first season. They were ready to air it til' they found out that Presley had died so it was scrapped.

I'm sure John Candy did a terrific Elvis Presley, but I suspect it was on the vicious side. Did that sketch ever air anywhere, and is it available to view?
Thanks. I have a stupid question: What DVD is Season Five on -- or is it on DVD? I've seen all of "SCTV Network 90" (I think), which includes only three seasons. Then there's "SCTV Channel," which I don't think I've seen at all, and "Second City TV," the original Canadian series, which I've seen most of. All these variations on the same title are confusing, and some of the Canadian segments were in the syndicated show.
The 90 minute shows were season 4 and 5, and those "seasons" you mentioned were cycles. Season 5 is "Volume 4" of the DVD set and has both of the final cycles.

"More anecdotal evidence for a connection between early mortality and obesity."
What?
John Candy impersonated these guys almost 30 years ago. He was doing guys like Orsen Wells who was an old man then.
Merlin Olsen just died, but he was 69.
Shelly Winters was in her mid 80s when she died.
It's sad, it shows how time has marched on, but you guys are acting like it's a tragedy that these guys are all dead. They were old.
Really SCTV went off the air 26 years ago. Almost all the celebrities they did on those shows are old now, at the very least in their middle ages. The kids they had perform on that show are in their 40's now.
Hell, everyone who was in the cast is in their 60s now. Seriously, early mortality? If you're talking about Candy, yes, the people he impersonated? Not really. Maybe Divine, he died of heart failure but I don't know if it had anything to do with his weight or not.
Also he did DeNiro in Raging Bull BQ, DeNiro is still ticking last I checked (although he's now an old man too)
Also, don't forget Candy did Jerry Mathers (the Beaver). Still alive last I heard.
You make excellent points, but I suspect the person who made that comment was joking. It's hard to tell on these boards who's playing dense and who's not playing.
...and here I thought all those years ago you were setting up for one of SCTV's sketches for The National Midnight Star. Rick Moranis reading the headline "Wizard of Oz Curse: Judy Garland, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr dead - is Ray Bolger next?
