a 1981 show?
I don't remember hearing about this version. Pee Wee's Playhouse and the movies yes but this one, I don't.

It showed on HBO and was released on video tape.
To give a more detailed response: Pee Wee started out as a stage show in LA (aimed at adults), played for months, and then was video taped for the HBO special. So this is the original PW, which is distinctly different from the movie and kids' show PW.
I'm just watching it now, and it is much different than the TV show. It is quite adult in nature, and was performed (what looks like) in front of a comedy club crowd. Some of the humour is adult, but childish (if you get my drift) with jokes about mirrors on shoes, masturbation etc. Interesting watching the genesis of the character.
If you get a chance, watch the 1981 version.

I haven't thought about it in so long, but you've jogged my memory... I definitely remember being a little irked that Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and his TV show were so toned-down and cleaned up compared to the original HBO thing I'd taped and watched over and over.
