Worst Performance in OFAH ever!

He only had one word but whenever I watch Chain Gang, I cringe at the scene in the restaurant when the bouncer stands up and says"You"! before the most telegraphed punch in TV history! I'm really surprised that no one, whilst shooting it, thought to say this is terrible and do something else.

Well, Roger Lloyd Pack can be forgiven for that in my view, and it was more down to John Sullivan giving it to him to do in the first place. Those last three episodes were very poor and sub standard compared to the show at its best and should probably never have been made. But blame the BBC for not letting the show finish on a natural high with Time On Our Hands.

reply

Trigger's blinking was simply terrible writing.
The punch bit in Chain Gang was terrible I agree and worse in the way the guy did it as opposed to RLP clearly looking at the script and thinking ... " fxxx who wrote that shxxx"

There was a interview with him around the time of the last episode where he said it had been filmed a couple of years earlier but he couldnt remember much about it really.

We now know why he sounded so disinterested.

reply

Absolutely agree with you ! To me those episodes that they brought them back don't even exist in my mind ! Even David Jason has said it was a mistake to bring them back.

reply

The penultimate episode,"Strangers on the Shore...!",is one of my favourites.

reply

While I agree the quality in those last few was below par, I actually like the way Sleepless in Peckham rounds everything off. It shows them with a little bit of money finally after the losing of their millions (which I didn't mind because it's exactly what i'd expect would happen), and more importantly Rodney finally gets some happiness after mostly misery for the entirety of the whole series. I'm not saying the last few episodes are anywhere near the quality of the earlier stuff, but I do like specifically that one episode for the reasons stated.

reply

That was ridiculous! Strangers on the shore was the only half decent one of the last trilogy made.

Michael wants to know what's going on.

reply

Completely agree. If the acting, and even the editing, had been a bit better it would have worked since he was obviously supposed to be saying 'you (cut to exterior shot) bastard'.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

reply

Also loads of cuts to stuff in OFAH now for swearing (Showing episode too early in day) or un pc stuff unacceptable in post millenium Britain that makes some bits jar.

Yesterday I saw the ep when Del meets his ex (with the hot daughter debbie) there's a scene where Del says can Mickeyt smell the BS (he says full work) they've cut it and it looks weird now they've even cut the laugh so as not to confuse those even though it jars badly.

reply

I was going to say that exact same thing. It just sounds ridiculous. They may as well have cut the entire 'Aikido' dialogue or even just cut it at bull...then cue the laugh track.

I think it's just lazy editing. Even in the same episode they've cut the dialogue completely when Del tells Juney's kid to get an ice cream at the 'Packie's'. Why not have Del hand him the money and say 'why don't you get yourself an ice cream...' CUT! We all would have got the gist. Instead now it switches to 'what about my brother?'

Packie is short for Pakistani. What's the big deal? I'm Irish and they still include the term 'Paddy'. I'm not bothered.

Cant remember what the episode was called but Casandra is sitting on an armchair throwing a tantrum or trying to act like shes throwing a tantrum when Rodney is leaving their appartment....just painful acting...really cringeworthy

"Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day"

reply

That would be 'Rodney Come Home' when she finds out from Del that Rodney is taking some bird to the flicks to see 'Honey I Shrunk The (bloody) Kids'

reply

I doubt that is correct, Rodney isn't present during that scene, only Del.

Let Zygons Be Zygons.

reply

That's clearly the scene he's referring to. He just mistook that it was Del and not Rodney.

And yeah. It's woeful acting/writing.

reply

There's a lot of too much slagging this actress of, I don't agree. I think its down to the script and direction, I personally thinks she's ok as a actress, till I saw all the comments, I never had a problem with Gwyneth Strong's performances, was quite surprised to see the negative comments. Some of it is over the top on one thread!

I hope that's not in reply to my coment

I was just stating an opinion like others but you have told ppl to go and play on the motorway, quite childish, really...I never said that, just because I blamed the script. So no not quiet this is a board for diff opinions. it sounds like you were taking the piss out of my comments!

reply

I completely agree. I actually never liked Cassandra in any of her scenes. The actress is awful.

I second this. Just awful.

reply

When I was at school the problem was that Packie was used as a term for all western Asians regardless of country of origin. This caused offence because a lot of them had bad history with Pakistani.

I've always been baffled by what could've been going through the Casting Director's head when they were looking for someone to play Jumbo Mills in "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and thought it would be a good idea to get that awful English actor who put on that terrible Australian accent in "Go West Young Man" to play the part of Del's mate from Australia.

No doubt people will tell me he's a great actor and you all thought he really was Australian........:)

I agree it was poor casting. Don't necessarily agree that the actor did a bad job though.

"Watch this....." (Leo T McGarry - Two Cathedrals)

reply

[deleted]

The bit where Jumbo first talks about the mirrored ceiling and then immediately closes his eyes because he regrets mentioning it is terribly acted. He just says the line without any emotion then stops speaking. It's like something from a school assembly!

reply

Must admit I thought he was reminiscing at that point, which rather emphasizes your point - any acting where you can't tell between regret and pleasure is missing a fairly wide target.

Mr Frampton, vis-a-vis your rump

reply

Having just seen that bit again, I'm not sure what I was thinking earlier.

There is a possibility that it was just a vehicle for the hair-combing joke, showing how Rodney and Albert steadily get the better of him after his early cockiness.

Mikeyg24 - I agree with everything you said. With regards to cutting the "Paki" word, it's ironic that had they dubbed "stani" onto the end of it then it would be considered ok. I noticed on watching a funny scene in Miami Twice again recently that Del & Rodney both say "noofter". No doubt that scene wont be aired on the BBC again either, yet all kinds of violent nasty films are allowed to be shown.

Personally, I'm sick of everything getting changed, cut and banned to suit a bunch of miserable hypocritical pc saddos.

reply

Again, it's only a very quick one, but one that always bothered me was the woman standing on the balcony in "Fatal Extraction" when the fight between her neighbours starts: "Oh no, that's all we need"... Where did they get her from?

reply

The worst performance ever in my opinion was the Chinese Takeaway onwer in The Yellow Peril . My god he was poor.

I saw the actor in something else, and his acting was very poor in that too. I actually thought to myself "his acting reminds me of that Chinese man from that episode of Only Fools" only to find out that they were the same person.

The actor has passed away now though, so R.I.P to him.

reply

What about Bonnie in 'Watching the girls go by' - I thought she was a poor actress

I've always found the guy that appears in "Rodney Come Home" with Rodders and Mickey when they're out at the club (I think he was supposed to be playing Jevon or another mate) to be really cringeworthy. And when he says "Be serious Mickey, I hate when you do your Timmy Mallett impersonation" which was obviously supposed to be a joke and there's no laughter or reaction from Rodney and Mickey, I've always found that a bit weird to watch, maybe it's just because I'm too young to remember Timmy Mallett and so don't get the reference
