The Best British Comedy Ever!!!

I really think It Ain't Half Hot Mum is the best BritCom ever! Yes, even better then Fawlty Towers and Blackadder!!! (And I'm a great fan of those series too...)

I think the power of this series is, that you really learn to know the characters. You become "attached" too them, and that's why this series is beautiful as well as funny. I remember that my mother and I were crying in front of the television, when the Sergeant Major said goodbye to Lofty (when they thought he couldn't go back with them to England)... And I love that scene when Parkins' mum is on the radio and the Concert Party starts to sing "I'll Be Seeing You"...awwww

My favourites are Rangi, because he's so cute and because he clears his throat all the time...LOL, Lofty, because he's also cute and he has a wonderful voice, and the Sergeant Major...erm...also because he has a wonderful voice...but not for singing...

I just wanted to say this, although this message board doesn't seem to be very crowded ...

"Land of hope and glory, mother of the free..." - "SHUT UP!!!"

It`s a shame we don`t see it in the US, i have been living for 20 years in the Netherlands and watching then on the BBC channel every week, i`m trying to buy all the 56 episodes but i need to know the name of each one of them to don`t buy it twice; Do you know of any official or unofficial site about the serie ?
Hope to hear from you soon, bye .

Yeah! Here are two sites:

http://www.phill.co.uk/comedy/hotmum/index.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/i/itainthalfhotmum_1299001653.shtml

The first one has a link to an episode guide and the second one has some info and pictures and even clips! There was another one, but I can't find it right now...I'll look for it later, and I'll post it here.

I definitely remember the one where they sing 'I'll be seeing you'..its my favourite episode, and incidently, the best version of that song that I've heard. The song finished to a really emotional response from the audience. Great show. Quite poignant at the end when they were all demobbed. But a bit of a scream when the Indian bloke writes a letter saying he's going to be coming to England to start a cafe in Bradford.

This show isn’t racist, but then it isn’t funny either. It actually pales in comparison with Dad’s Army. The plot is generally unconvincing and the dialogue isn’t particularly memorable. It basically shows how India gave an opportunity for the worthless segments of the British society to be employed and feel superior.

thats most of the comical situation of this fine show. modern history can be funny too so get over your santimonious history teacher sermon. the comedy comes out of the various fish out of water, hence even the title.

Get over your santimonious history teacher sermon? Any evidence of this?

it seems you have little insight both into the historical framework and yourself. whats more, you have used the same vague didactic term in at least two threads, the unfocussed remark which goes something along the lines of useless members of the british empire wanting to feel superior etc. perhaps you can try something with a bit more substance yourself seeing as you wish others to be more specific.

". . . it seems you have little insight both into the historical framework . . ." blah, blah, blah.

Come on people, I think this is a discussion with no end. You can't persuade people who like It Ain't Half Hot Mum (such as me, obviously) by using logical arguments. And on the other hand, you can't persuade someone who doesn't like It Ain't Half Hot Mum by telling them it is funny. You either think it's funny or you don't.

I can see how if you don't like this comedy, you try to account for it by means of finding arguments for why you don't like it. However, comedy is a tricky thing. There are comedies I love, such as The Young Ones and Bottom, for which I could think of millions reasons why someone would not like them. But I do like them. In my experience, there is nothing logical about comedy and sense of humour. And if someone enjoys a comedy, why would someone who doesn't enjoy it try to persuade the others? Enjoying is better than not enjoying. That's why I rarely post messages on IMDb boards of films I don't like. (I'd rather spend time on stuff I enjoy.)

I totally respect people who don't like the stuff I do like, but please don't try to talk me into disliking my favourite comedy. (You won't succeed, and even if you did, all that would happen is that I'd have one thing less to enjoy. What's the point of that?)

A tip to everyone on IMDb: stick to posting stuff on boards of films and series you like. It's so much nicer. Or if you have to be negative, at least respect the fans' opinion as well.
