George Layton

Does anyone know why George Layton was only in series 1 and 2? Was he written out or did he decide not to come back?

He decided not to come back because he wanted to concentrate more on writing.

I think it suited the series to seem him go, as his character was the most competent of all the concert party.

His character was intended as the central one, but Windsor Davies stole the show and with Michael Bates, Melvyn Hayes etc all putting across strong comic performances, there was a danger he would end up as a forgettable straight man.

Layton has said in the past he could not get a good handle on the character. There was supposed to be a Sgt Bilko element to him.

Its that man again!!

I thought IAHHM lost something with George Layton's departure in the same way that AYBS did with Trevor Bannister's. Both of them played something of a 'straight man', yes - the more 'normal' one compared to the OTT characters - but that balanced the cast out. Solly was always a tiny bit more military and competent than the rest of the Concert Party and it was believable that he'd made Bombardier at some point and would be in charge, whereas Gloria in that role crossed the line and took it from just-about-believable to silly.

i agree. he was a good character, and being somewhat more grounded in reality made him a bit more belivable as a bombadier.
