The IMDB soundtrack section says the music is by the Eagles. Is this really THE EAGLES, the 70's rock group or just some random English band that happens to share the same name?

The song IS by a group called the Eagles but I don't think it is the same group as your thinking of... For note the tune is called 'journey of the sorcerer' and I found a copy of it on Kazaa without much problem.

Yea, I have a tape of the original BBC radio broadcast of "Hitchhiker". That's where it was first heard. Great tune, perfect for the series.

Actually it is those Eagles. It's off their "One of those nights" album. But I won't tell anyone if you don't and we can keep liking it and pretend it's by someone else.

As pointed out, it is THE Eagles, but the song wasnt written for the show. One of the members of the band didnt even know that Douglas had used the song before they met at a party some years ago.
