Why didn't Michael Warren become HSB's answer to...

Denzel Washington? I also wonder why neither Taurean Blacque nor the late Kiel Martin never became bigger stars??

I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature, .

Death probably interfered with Kiel's career arc, but I hear you about the two black actors. Warren in particular was a fine actor (probably still is) - Blacque was kind of saddled with that "funky"/Shaft persona which looks a bit dated now but his interaction with Martin/JD is wonderful. You really believed Washington was a guy you could lean on - a rock of common sense compared to the flaky, unreliable JD (to whom he was touchingly loyal).

It's ironic that so many of the bit part players went on to have stellar careers (Joaquin Phoenix, Frances MacDormand, I even saw the android guy out of Star Trek TNG [I think} yesterday as a porn movie director!) while the main players, whose acting ability could not be faulted (maybe Lt Calletano?) stayed in the backwaters.

PS, I saw Kiel Martin recently in an episode of Kung Fu, and he really was excellent.

I too recently saw that episode of 'Kung Fu'. It was fun seeing him in a different role even if both are cops. A detective on 'HSB' and a sheriff (or marshal?) on 'KF'.

I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature, .

It's funny - I hadn't watched Kung Fu for about 40 years and the first time I do, up pops Kiel Martin. I really enjoyed it - excellent show.

I think Taurean Blanque took care of a lot of children, maybe adopted them.

Sometimes it depends on what you're offered...and what you take. Denzel had movie roles while he was on St Elsewhere. Those movies were hits, so it was easy for him to fully move into movies. Warren stayed in tv & has been working regularly. And of course his daughter in law is Jessica Alba.
Sadly Martin didn't have much time afterwards. I still find it fascinating that he married Dean Martin's daughter. She didn't have to change her last name.
And as another poster stated Taurean Blacque became known as the first African American to adopt.

reply

First African American single male to adopt, to be precise. Couples weren't really having a problem, but it had been impossible to get a court to allow a single black man to adopt before he fought it.

Blacque appears to disappear after HSB (more specifically, after starring in DeepStar Six) because he went back to theater for the most part, and theater credits aren't listed here. He never stopped working, and eventually started showing up on TV again.

Michael Warren is a VERY accomplished actor. Sure, he didn't become a "Denzel" but his acting career has been QUITE accomplished. Just take a look at his acting credits!!! I admire him very much.

The answer is simple. A Denzel comes around very seldom. His level of charisma, gravitas, etc. is rare. I am hard pressed to think of someone else in his generation who has what he has.
