Chief seemed like a white version of James Evans from Good Times.

I swear the Chief was James' white counterpart...especially during season one.

He was worse. James anger came because he couldn't find a good job the chief was just grumpy and miserable.

They both came from the "school of hard knocks" they didn't have time (or the patience) to reason with a child. You got out of line, you payed the price.

I have a feeling Sam would've liked if she did. Sam was a weird kid.

He also reminded me a bit of Archie Bunker on All in the Family, probably due to both actors coming from NY.

I think Chief may have even bested James when it came to his penchant for physical discipline and low tolerance for misbehaving. James would issue blunt warnings that basically ended all noise, or the whole episode would center around the beating that was going to happen...but at the last minute wouldn't. Chief, on the other hand, would take off his belt and actually slapped the girls a few times in the beginning.
