DVD and comments PLEASE

This is absolutely one of the best British television series ever made. The acting is first rate throughout (including a young Bob Hoskins). The story is superb and it is a wonderful tribute to the early days of film making. Scene after scene both tells the story and echos scenes from silent films of the period. The last episode is filled with so much tragedy and triumph that I was on the edge of my seat in awe while watching it.
Clips from it featured in Masterpiece Theater's 15th and 20th anniversary shows, but now it seems completely forgotten.
Oddly, its sequel (of sorts) "Pictures" has been available on vhs and dvd for years. While it is very good it just isn't as special as this series was. My tape is starting to fade so if the powers that be ever read this PLEASE bring this out on dvd, no extras necessary.

If there are any other fans of this series out there please add your comments to this message board.

I'll make a good Gordon, Gordon!

I thought I was the only person in the world who remembers this wonderful series. Everything you say is true. At least you have a tape!! I have nothing. Please, oh please, DVD gods -- hear our plea and let us enjoy Flickers again.

Never saw "Pictures" -- I guess I should check it out.

By the way -- my husband and I are huge "Local Hero" fans, too!

This is one I want to own a copy of to view again and again. And if you like this, you probably would like Rock Follies, Red Dwarf and The Singing Detective - all great British made shows.

I remember watching this as a kid.....was terrfic stuff...and Bob H looked well hot!!!

I agree - "Flickers" certainly is one of the best minis ever produced. It is amazing to me that the far inferior "Pictures" has been marketed in both VHS and DVD formats, but the Powers that Be have overlooked Flickers entirely. Considering that Bob Hoskins became such a well known actor, one wonders why Flickers has faded into oblivion.

I just watched it again today - my brother-in-law burned a dvd for me from our VHS home taped version. I am of course thrilled to have it, but the tape had already begun to fade considerably, and the sound quality is atrocious.

Both my sister and I watch the upcoming dvd releases constantly, hoping for word that Flickers is coming. I am afraid that it is a lost cause, especially since it it not even available in England.

You are so right, ringriddler. This is a hilarious, well-acted comedy, which actually makes you CARE about the characters, in a way that comedies often do not. I'm so glad we have the DVD made from tape, but it's true, time and use have already somewhat eroded the sound and picture.

Love ya, sis!

And I'd make a good Gordon, Gordon, too. Love Local Hero. Now that also deserves a new edition with commentary--but that's food for another thread.

I totally agree. I have been looking for this series to come on VHS or DVD. Whoever is in charge of doing this, please make it happen.

Someone, please, please bring this series to a DVD - I also have been searching for years to get any type of copy of this 1980 mini series "Flickers" shown on Masterpiece Theater.

Although I started a new board for this message I also wanted to let everyone who posted a message here, especially you fraserpatty and your sister, that you don't have to wait until April 25th if you don't want to. Acorn has the exclusive rights to the series until the above date and they have it available RIGHT NOW. I just ordered my set and they had it in stock so I just had to put a rush on the delivery so that I can be enjoying the series again this weekend. They have it priced at 49.99 and you can get ten percent off if you join there advantage club. You can reach them at www.acornonline.com or by calling 1-888-870-8047.

Whenever you get it I know that each of you will enjoy rewatching this wonderful series again so best wishes to you all.

I'll make a good Gordon, Gordon!

Hey there, Mad19571!

Though I love this series I opted to wait till the April 25th release and go the cheap DeepdiscountDVD route. I am so looking forward to this next week! Thanks for your info on Acorn--I already get their catalog. I wonder if one day I'll look in there and see that another wonderful series, "Tenko" will be available? Sigh, one can dream.

*counts down the minutes till her dvd of "Flickers" arrives...*

I just finished watching the DVDs. I bought mine from Amazon.com. It's every bit as good as I remember. Not only was it the first time that Bob Hoskins became known in America, it's also the best role I've seen for Frances De La Tour, even better than "Rising Damp."
