Why wasn't it as big a ratings hit as the other big glitzy US soaps like Dallas and Dynasty?

Why do we reckon it didn't make as big an impact in the television ratings both in the USA and globally as the other American soaps? As well as less impact also in the zeitgeist socially/culturally.
