Can someone explain how is possible to release at once all 5 seasons of the series called HOTEL which had minimum success back in the day compared to FALCON CREST and there are no more seasons after season 3 available from this series in dvd ?
Poor sales of previous dvds of Falcon Crest and Knots Landing are the main reason more seasons haven't been released. Lorimar being bought out by Warners probably didn't help. Music rights for Appolonia definitely has nothing to do with it- she appeared in, I think, 7 or 8 episodes in season 5, and it would be really easy to edit out any music if that were the case, which it's not.
Trust me, if FC or KL had sold better, all the seasons would have been released. The best way to sell the dvds would be to sell all the seasons at once, like as a limited edition box set, for $250. That's a lot of money, but the true fans will go for it.
I'm not saying it's not a factor. but what i'm saying is there are other series which have poor sales and yet they keep release them. i'm sure HOTEL is one of those series.
Well, I checked out amazon and I think there are a couple of explanations. First, Hotel was made by a different production company than FC. Second, and probably most significantly, there were only 5 seasons of Hotel, vs 9 for Falcon Crest and 14 for Knots Landing. The studio would lose much more money releasing 9 seasons vs 5 seasons. So in other words, if FC had only been on for 5 seasons, it would have been more economically feasible for the studio to release it.
That's why the best bet to get FC on DVD is for the studio to release the series all at once as a set, probably at a price of $200-250.
I wanted to add, most dvd releases are scheduled at certain intervals. It wasn't until FC season 3 was released that the studio realized the series was a poor seller. But because there were 6 more seasons, they just stopped it. Now look at Hotel- they released 3 seasons before they realized what a poor seller it was. But with only 2 seasons left, the studio could afford the loss.
Flamingo Road was produced by the same company as Falcon Crest and Knots Landing, so that seems to be a common thread.
I would love to see an original, studio released dvd set of Flamingo Road come out. With only two seasons and that all star cast, it could happen. I would flip to hear commentaries by Morgan Fairchild, Stella Stevens, Cristina Raines, Mark Harmon, or Stella Stevens. Just getting it released on DVD would be fabulous, though- anything else would be icing.
