Falcon Crest - more popular in Sweden

Caught your attention!

But seriously, it was way more popular here. Like my mom would cancel appointments (do people still have those?) to catch a Falcon Crest episode. It was the reason we got a VHR. Even the last season she'd be recording like a mad woman!

Like like.

Why do you like Falcon Crest?

It was called "Maktkamp på Falcon Crest" here (Power Struggle at Falcon Crest).

Interesting. I think like so many American viewers, it was something we watched in the beginning because it followed Dallas. Also, Jane Wyman had a very strong reputation as an actress, though she hadn't been on the screen much since the early 70s. But people still knew who she was, especially because her name was in the news a lot when Reagan was elected.

Quickly, by season 2, the characters on Falcon Crest gelled and the stories were on fire. There were weeks when I thought it was actually better than Dallas. But never better than Knots Landing, which is my favorite primetime soap of the 80s.

After Abby Dalton left at the beginning of season 6 and Robert Foxworth exited at the end of that year, it wasn't the same. I watched it in season 7 but it was no longer must-see. Season 8 was horrible, and I remember being upset they killed Melissa off (to make room for Pilar, was how I saw it).

I barely got through the eighth season season-- and Ana-Alicia coming back for some episodes at the end of season 8 (as a different character) made it a bit more watchable again.

But when Maggie died in the swimming pool at the beginning of season 9, I couldn't watch it anymore. Too many deaths by that point. With the exception of Lance and Emma, there were no major characters left from the beginning (and Emma was already beginning her exit story).

During the last season of Falcon Crest, I still kept up on the plots by reading about the show in TV Guide (before internet boards obviously) and reading the synopses in Soap Opera Digest. I guess I was looking for a reason to come back and make it part of my weekly viewing habits once more. But when I read what was happening I was not compelled to try it again.

Susan Sullivan's departure, Jane Wyman's absence, and Gregory Harrison taking over just wasn't for me. I did come back and watch the very last episode, and I thought they wrapped it up properly. But I felt it should have been axed long before...probably at the end of season 6, when Chase died.
