Can anyone explain...?

So I've been looking for this series on video, DVD, anything for the last 10yrs. I first saw Triffids when I was 8yrs old on the BBC and it has haunted me ever since. Finally after years of trying to track down the original BBC version, I found it in 2005 on DVD in a local store.

I rushed home and finally started to watch what I'd waited so long to see. Trouble is - it wasn't as scary or haunting as I remember. In fact is was rather clunky and poorly acted. But then, out of nowhere, came the most frightening thing I have ever had happen to me...

During one of the scenes (where Bill is taken to a hotel in a minibus with a group of blind people to look after) the scenery started to look very familiar. Then I recognised it, the scene was filmed on my street.
The minibus with Bill and the blind people then pulls up to the hotel. And guess what? The hotel is my house! The shot freezes on my bedroom window - the very room where I'm watching the DVD, 24yrs after it was filmed.

I did some research. My apartment is in an old building that did indeed used to be a hotel. I moved in 5yrs ago. I've been searching for Day of the Triffids for over 10yrs. Then when I find it, and watch it, I see the room I am watching it in appear on the screen. So I must have seen my future home when I first saw the series back in 1982. What does it all mean? Any ideas? Is it the end of the world?

Weird man!!! That is the coolest story I have ever heard. I remeber watching this show either on CBC or PBS here in Toronto (we get both). It really effected me. I would have been 8 too.

That's such an amazing story, I'd love to be part of a piece of John Wyndham memorabilia like that. I've just bought the series, it's sad that more of his books haven't been made into (decent) adaptations.

reply

I believe 2 more of Wyndham's books have been "adapted" to the screen. I caught a few episodes of "Chocky" when it was aired as a miniseries. And "The Midwich Cuckoos" was made into a reasonably high-budget movie - of a different title (can't remember what).

Village of the Damned was made as a film in 1960 too..erm, that is, was made in 1960 as well, not made in 1962..I haven't seen it in years but although it was (obviously) dated I think it worked pretty well..especially the spooky, smart ar*e kids, and the final sequences where their 'teacher' had to resist them!

I remember "Chocky". Wasn't it an afternoon kid's series on ITV? Like "Triffids" it creeped the hell out of me. Can't remember much about it other I found elements of it pretty scary (didn't Chocky comunicate with some kids using psychic powers?).

Thanks for reminding me dudley! I'm really spooked. Now I'll never get to sleep tonight... ;-)

"I think you're a load of old crap too, Mr Mulligan."

Very remarkable story - fascinating!

It would have been even creepier if the camera shot had gone into the room and there was a person watching the original movie on the TV...and it was...YOU.

And the triffids were right outside your room's door, right now!!! And then they bust the door down and then...

Seriously, it's just a coincidence. Someone has to live in a filming location.
