I remember watching this when it was shown on the BBC.
I would have been about 11.

It most have had an incredible impact on me because years later when someone mentioned the show, I could still remember some of the scenes from it.
(The library of Alexandria, the ship flying through the solar system)

As to how old a child needs to be to appreciate it.
It will have more to do with the child's mind and imagination rather than chronological age. If they can look at the night sky and can ask a question, they are old enough. They might not understand all the concepts but that will be a big push to learn more, so they can understand it.

I recently got the DVD set and had to stop myself from watching it all in one sitting. The effects are showing their age, nothing else is.

I was ten when the show first aired on PBS and I credit it with giving me an interest in science and astronomy, or at least spurring it on, and possibly influencing my way of thinking as well. I don't know that I grasped every single thing but it definitely engaged my sense of wonder.

There's certainly no harm in showing it to a child of any age.

Dunno about others, but I was nine when this series changed my worldview forever and started a life long love of astronomy.

I suppose there's no exact answer to that. I didn't even know about the Cosmos series until I was 17 (I am 20 now), and the first time I watched it, I enjoyed it but I'm not sure I appreciated it fully. I have re-watched it again recently and now truly appreciate how much of a perfect series it is. I guess the only way to find out is to give it a try! I'm sure that some young kids would appreciate it instantly, but it might be too much to fully take in at that age.

I would say ten to twelve as a rule of thumb. However, children are individuals and some might appreciate it even at age eight.
