WHAT A GREAT SHOW !!!!!

BRET MAVERICK remains to this day an underrated gem. A wonderful "sequel" series that more then successfully captured the "retirement" of one of television's great characters with James Garner reprising the role that made him famous. It made perfect sense that a man in his late fifties in the Old West would realize that he could no longer "polish a saddle" and attempt to settle down to a settled life before modern civilization came West,a theme that Garner explored before in his other great overlooked series NICHOLS, which he considers his best show. But,Maverick's retirement was anything BUT settled as evidenced by the great stories and episodes and the hectic pursuit to maintain his one shot at peace,The Lazy Ace Ranch he bought, and the Red Ox Saloon, the bar he won and co-owns with ex-sheriff Tom Guthrie, played superbly by country star Ed Bruce. The rest of the cast sparkles with Darleen Carr,Richard Hamilton,Ramon Bieri, and Stuart Margolin being the standouts. In the last episode,Brother Bart, played by Jack Kelly of course, shows up and was also to be a regular in the never realized second season. Despite more then respectable ratings,NBC stupidly pulled the plug on a show that was nominated for two Emmys and a Golden Globe Award in 1982. A great, great show not to be overlooked and ,in some ways, ahead of it's time.
