Bret's Arsenal

At the beginning of the big poker game, the sheriff first confiscates all weapons.

When it's Bret's turn to surrender all such, the sheriff seems to know every trick Bret has, and collects quite a haul from him.

It was a wonderful scene. Well played, and an excellent character introduction for the new generation of viewers of just how sneaky and tricky Maverick can be.

Does anyone have a complete list of all of the weapons Bret carries, the types, and where he discreetly carried them? I also remember that the sheriff didn't know about one of them.

I've re-watched the pilot episode, and now have a listing of what Bret was carrying.

Would you believe it was 10 (and possibly one more)guns in all that Maverick was carrying?

Something that prompted the comment by the sheriff about how Maverick must be seriously concerned about falling into a pond.

Now, keep in mind most of them, with only two exceptions, are very small pistols with short range and power. Derringer sized or smaller, and only 1 to 4 rounds, but seriously dangerous within the limited range of say..., a poker table.

Here's the list.

1. (Big Gun) A sidearm. Unidentified, but looked like a typical western 6 Shooter pistol. Probably a Colt .45 Peacemaker. R hip.

2. A Sharps 4-barrel (Pepper Box). R-sleeve.

3. Colt .41. L-sleeve.

4 & 5. A matched set of Brigsbottoms. L&R rear waistband.

6. (Big Gun) Barnes single-shot .50 cal. pistol. R-boot.

7. An unspecified "Palm-gun", about the size of a pocket watch, in the crown of his hat.

8. "Belly Gun". Front waist.

9. "Hold-out" gun. Small of the back.

10. Pocket Watch chain fob. A very small (functional) .22 cal chain fob.

11. (?) Never seen, but was later claimed by Maverick. A second derringer up the same sleeve as the first one.

I wouldn't bet against it being true.

As Guthrie told him, "You better be careful not to fall in the pond..."
