Does anyone know where I can find this on video ?

Hi,
I am trying to find this TV series if available on video.
Does anyone know where I can obtain it or has the series they wish to sell ?
Thanks ANDY-THE-FIRST

Amazon (Canada).NTSC Format VHS video released 20 May2003

Save your money! I just received the video from Amazon.ca and it's not the mini-series at all, even though the cast list on the site makes it appear that it would be. Instead it's just a 50 minute episode of the "In Search of History" series. You know the kind: several "experts" on the topic are interviewed and a narrator fills in the rest while portraits of the people are shown. This 50 minute VHS edition can be yours too for $38 (plus tax)!

So if anyone knows where you can find the REAL mini-series I'd love to have a copy.

reply

I'm looking for it too, but have had no success. I'm happy to buy second hand copies, or copies of a professional copy. I'm not picky.

I have some strong memories of this series too, but sadly I doubt that it was ever released on video, and it's probably near the end of the queue of the BBC's priorities for DVD release. The reason is that, whatever its merits, at the time of its transmission in 1981, when it was the BBC's flagship autumn drama series that year, it was going head-to-head with Brideshead Revisited over on ITV. Though they were very different series, and the Borgias was not at all as bad as it was made out to be, it was generally felt to be the loser on all points of comparison - perhaps the only time in British TV history that commercial television came out on top in a direct comparison in terms of quality (as opposed to popularity). If it hadn't run against Brideshead, I suspect the Borgias would have been considered a not entirely successful, but still perfectly workmanlike, piece of popular TV drama.

Once the perception was established, however, there was no going back, and the ridicule piled on from press and broadcast journalism alike - for example, one waggish newspaper reviewer at the time pointed out that when Adolfo Celi said Cesare and someone else had gone to Naples together, it sounded like he was saying "they got nipples together". The general attitude of derision was heightened by the feeling that the programme used nudity and sex scenes in desperation to compensate for weaknesses in the script. (While clearly trying to emulate the successful elements of "I, Claudius", it lacked the quality of source material that made that series such a milestone.) The Borgias couldn't bounce back from the general perception of naffness, and was considered dead half way through its run - probably uniquely for a drama series of such high profile, ambition, and cost, the BBC never repeated it even once (most such dramas are at least shown once again within a few months to catch viewers who started watching the first run part way through).

Its demise has had a clear effect on the careers of the actors involved. Anne Louise Lambert was a shining star whose reputation seems to have been terminally damaged by the association, judging by the low profile of most of her later work. Oliver Cotton has scarcely made an impact since (though he was impressive as the police chief in The Dancer Upstairs), and Adolfo Celi did only one more English-language project afterwards (though given the critical mauling he probably had little appetite for any more).

So, most of the criticism was probably undeserved, but it's the reason why this series is now impossible to get hold of. Someday, someone at BBC Enterprises too young to remember the fiasco will dust off the master tapes and think "Why not put this out on DVD?", but my guess is we'll have a while to wait yet.

reply

ah.... I think we must have watched this around the same time ! The Borgias wasn't bad - just think how much money the BBC/HBO have thrown at 'Rome' but i do recall it was let down some iffy acting - and an unwise attempt to spend what money was avaliable on film stock for many scenes.

I, too, have been looking for this series on DVD or Tape with no luck. I have been wanting to see it again. It has been 20 years since I have seen it. Not the greatest piece of work, but with Edwin Newmans renaissance interjections it was very interesting to hear the historical facts of the renaissance along with watching the portrayal. I would rate it a 7.5-8.0, highly watchable.

If you still have the recordings of this series, could you please make me a copy too? My email address is [email protected] If you send me your address, I'll send you the money for the blank. Thanks. I think this series was grossly underrated. IMHO it was years ahead of its time. It included some great performances and I think it could be surprise hit on DVD if the BBC would only release it.

I don't suppose you also have taped the series the BBC made about Henry II and his sons (The Devil's Crown)?

reply

I would be very grateful for a copy of this series.
Please let me know if you are still willing to tape this.
Thanks,

I would also like to see this fabulous series again & I have written to the BBC regarding this matter. Here is the reply they sent me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am currently unaware of any plans to release this series. However, if you would like to make a suggestion for its release as a DVD, I would suggest you put it in writing to the Programme & Acquisitions Department who are responsible for the commercial DVD release of BBC programmes. Please write to:

Please note that there must be adequate public interest before a release can be arranged.

UKNova has bittorrents of some of the the ten episodes of this BBC series available for download. You need to be a member of UKNova and you must maintain a seeding ratio of 1 or more to be able to download stuff as it appears on their site. The uploader is up to episode 7. When all ten episodes are uploaded, someone will probably make a repack of all ten, a total of 7 GB. Unless you have a DSL equivalent online connection (not dial-up), it is unlikely that you will be able to "seed" enough data to build up your ratio so you can download all ten of these episodes. The quality of the XviD files so far is super, apparently digitized from a master tape. FYI, Xvid is an mp4 compressed data file format, that you can playback on you computer with the free VLC media player. Some DVD players e.g. Phillips DVP642 also can play back XviD files.

Hi, I finally got in to UKNOVA, but can't find any listing for this series. Do you have any info on what its called?
Thanks in advance
