remember doing german at high school and we would sometimes get german 'teen' mags for translation and there were oten articles about him. iirc singing songs about living in harmony, not destroying the environment etc.
Herbert Grönemeyer is still one of the most popular German pop stars. From 1984 to 2007 all of his albums (except one) were no. 1 in the German charts. Already in 1986 he stopped acting and concentrated fully on his music.
Maybe he is a 'pop star with a conscience' but he did much more than political songs (e.g. many beautiful love songs) and his political songs are not so much "about living in harmony" but full of sharp criticism.
