I have only seen the Directors's Cut, so maybe the answer is in the Mini-Series version.

The boat is ordered to an Italian port but is temporarily sunk off Gibraltar. Did the skipper then return to France, rather than proceed to Italy?

They went back to La Rochelle - they never broke through Gibraltar, and with the badly damaged boat, it would have been simply suicidal.
