Worst episode?

Just wondering what everyone's thought was on the worst episode of the series, for me it was A MAN OF SORROWS,which i have just watched, a very dark and obscure story line which after watching it you would of thought it was a totally different program

reply

I disagree. A Man of Sorrow was yes very dark and obscure but in my opinion it was actually quite good (despite lacking Hungerford!)

For me it is a toss up for 2 episodes from series 9 - Snow in Provence which was just plain dull, and Warriors.

Season 9, Episode 8 WARRIORS. Without a doubt THE WORST episode of the whole series. It is so unbelievably bad that I get angry whenever I see it and TRY to sit through it. It is like torture! Bergerac is my favourite TV show, and this is not just a bad episode, but an episode I want to shout at and turn off because it is so ridiculous.

There are quite a few other BAD episodes during Season 9. SNOW IN PROVENCE has been mentioned by others, but my second least favourite is the Season 9 opener: SOMETHING TO HIDE where Danielle's cousin is a fashion designer and the story is mostly set in France is at best confusing, and at worst completely boring!

I'm very sad that Bergerac as a show went out on a low rather than a high.

Note: I used to hate how sad a depressing A MAN OF SORROWS was. However, as I am older and have seen it many times, I have changed my mind. I find it thought provoking and different (in a very shocking way), and well written and paced. In conclusion, it was not what Bergerac fans expected, but I guess it shook the show up a bit at the time. Glad things went back to normal with the following episode though!

The worst episodes are the ones with Phillipa Vale. Liza Goddard is an awful actress and I don't see any of the alleged "chemistry" between her and Nettles. I know this is controversial, but there you go.

One man's meat etc.

I loved the Liza Goddard episodes!

I'm a bit puzzled by "A Man of Sorrows". Presumably the reason for sending Jim to London to befriend Hallowes was to trace the money and/or heroin Hallowes walked off with. If this is the case, why did Barney not just tell Jim that's what he had to do? Surely Barney does, actually, trust Jim?!

By the way, at the end, DCI Chater say "this whole operation was an entrapment". We now know that "entrapment" is completely illegal.

Just finished the series ... series 9 was painful. Really, a terrible end to the show.

Snow in Provence was dreadful. On The Rocks worst of the lot because it was just so OBVIOUS. Really, the whole thing was clear from the first scene.

A Man of Sorrows is one of my favourites!

Still the odd good episode late in the run though - The Evil That Men Do springs to mind. My Friend Charlie wasn't bad either.

Obviously All For Love is the strongest episode but not really part of series 9 proper.

By far the worst episode of Bergerac is the 1989 Christmas Special "Second Time Around". It lacks any link with the end of series 7 when Bergerac sails off for a sabbatical, or the start of series 8 when he comes back to Jersey.

In addition, the episode is way more violent than the usual series episodes, and portrays Jersey as some sort of gangster's paradise, like a UK version of Miami Vice, which presumably the jokers behind the look and feel of this "special" were trying to ape. Ian Kennedy Martin's script doesn't work, the direction has pretentions of being for the big screen, and John Nettles himself looks bored and slightly ill at ease with much that goes on. Thankfully, even though some of the episodes in series 8 and 9 were weak, they were never as dire as this. A charmless and completely out of character edition of the show - and not terribly festive for Christmas 1989.

Second Time Around was bad, I'll grant you, but it can't possibly be as bad as Warriors. Warriors has to be some of the worst television ever produced! Haha!

I have just watched The Assassin from series 9. It is a rather ponderous episode. The hit man in hiding just seemed to pick Jim's name out of the book without doing a back ground check and Jim himself forgets that his last assignment as a police man was as a bodyguard.

Series 5 - I think? - Sparta. This ridiculous right wing terrorist group funded by some lord nob which concludes with a gunfight of Bergerac with one handgun vs gang armed with at least two machine guns and pistol - and voilĂ  - nobody dies and Bergerac, philippa vale end victorious with the French armed police turning up instantly to a radio SOS! Plus the crap gunfight is illustrated by a compendium of static photos of the protagonists. Finally ice maiden makes her getaway on a French police launch . Utter bollocks!
