shareI think that his love of cats was put in to contrast with his gruff masculinity. It would've been very stereotypical for him to have owned several big dogs.
shareDogs are stupid, obedient and capable of causing damage, they are the mainstay of the bad guy. Just like 4-legged henchmen. Cats on the other hand you need to earn their trust or loyalty, they do what they want and have incredible independence. Forget to feed one and he'll piss on your jacket.
