regarding the end

To anyone that did not COMPLETELY hate this film...
I thought it was an OK movie until the end, which completely ruined the whole feel of the movie, and was way to upbeat.
I think that they could have showed the end scene to symbolize that he was pretty much totally crazy, and then cut to a scene showing the van crashing and showing Harries corpse or something, to show he was dead, to end the film on a more morbid note.
Does anyone agree?

Almost a year later... No. I think the ending was hilarious and underlined the darkly comic atmosphere of the movie.

Watching the film on DVD with commentary by the film's writer/director Lewis Jackson and the film's lead star Brandon Maggart, at the end Lewis says you're actually supposed to hear the sound of the van crashing after it goes off the road (although you don't actually see it crash,) and that the scene with the van flying is in fact supposed to all be in Harry's mind (perhaps what he imagines just before he dies). In an interview on the disk Lewis says he probably made some things in the film a bit too subtle and if he were to re-do the film he would have made some things a bit more clear. In otherwords yes, Harry really does die at the end, there's no actual magic in the film, it's just all in his mind.

The end makes the movie the great. You hear the van crash and explode, but when his brother looks up the fan is flying away, showing that he's become Santa Claus.

So what you're saying is he gets reincarnated as Santa Claus AFTER dying?

no i think his brother is looking up as the van crashes through the bridge. the van flying away was harry's fantasy as he died. it was the best ending possible for him.

reply

No! I want him to live forever!!

That shot of Harry's van flying off into the sky like a sleigh was obviously just in Harry's unbalanced mind.

I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find
