The ending should have been. [spoilers]

Just watched this film, and I think they threw away a much better ending that they went through trouble to build up.

During the scene in the Taylor's Gas Station, Greg asks Taylor "Did you shoot all these animals?" and Taylor says he did. Sandy then asks "Why?" in a completely disapproving manner, as if telling him there is no justification for shooting animals whatsoever.

Later on, Taylor gives her his rifle and tells her to look at the side of the door to the aliens food shack, revealing he has planted dynamite there to blow him up when he returns. We see Sandy's POV down the scope.

Given those two scenes, I figured when the detonator failed to set off the explosives, Sandy would have to use the rifle to shoot the dynamite to blow up the alien... in some kind of personal struggle with her conscience on whether to shoot a gun to kill a creature, which she was so against doing at the Gas Station.

Instead, she just fumbled with the wiring and blew it up with the detonator... I felt as if I had smelled lamb chop cooking but was given a cheese sandwich while the chop was thrown away :(

OK.

But if you had to choose between killing a bear or deer, which are pretty harmless if left alone, and a human flesh eating alien.

I'd have not problem taking out the vicious, man eating alien.

Great idea, and yes - it probably would have worked well on screen. But it's established that Sandy has never hunted, so she's almost certainly unfamiliar with firearms and rifles in particular, and therefore it would highly unrealistic for her to successfully shoot and hit the dynamite (a very small target) from such a distance. I think the ending works better as it is.
