Where are all the Native American lead actors?

I want to start by saying I love this movie and have for 35 years. My big question is why all the main lead actors aren't actually Native American. I mean, who'd have thought that they'd pull out Trevor Howard as Windwalker? He's British! I find it sad that they couldn't find more actual Native talent! Any thoughts?

Mea culpa, I didn't realize that Nick Remus was Native American, but what about Rudy Diaz or James Remar? Their backgrounds don't seem to suggest Native American histories? Sorry again!

James Remar was pretty hot. I did see his blue eyes and wondered if he'd been adopted into the tribe or was a half breed.

The Crow guy with a red painted face was obviously not Native either.
