Gordon Willis - famous DP's first and only directing attemp

just in case you didn't know, gordon willis is one of the country's foremost cinematographers who shot the godfather I/II and many of woody allen's best.

he has said he never thought of himself as a director but was 'pressured' into this one and decided to see if he was correct about his lack of talent in this field and came to the conclusion that he had been correct.

i haven't seen the film yet

Dear uckum: Finding a way to see WINDOWS isn't easy. I sometimes wonder where the original negative might be. It was a United Artists' movie.

I suppose I could make a small fortune by making NTSC copies of the PAL video I have of WINDOWS and selling them. But my VCR isn't a dual-deck . . . and so it goes.

Gordon Willis' cinematography skills come through perfectly here. As for his direction, I wouldn't say he lacks talent, but he could have used a better script in this case.

He must have owed someone money, or made a bad bet, or pissed off a producer's daughter, or...

Heh, funnily enough, I am reading Douglas Hart's book on being a camera assistant, and in his rhapsody about working with Willis, he gushily enthuses about the cinematic wonder that is Windows :D

Well, it was well shot...

Supp. Actress-Elizabeth Ashley

Pretty impressive, however it should have been 6. They forgot Worst Supp. Actor-Joseph Cortese, the blandest cop I think I have ever seen portrayed.

The boring screenplay is the biggest fault and all Willis had to rely on, were his dark and static visuals, which I think he thought he was shooting a hybrid of Allen's INTERIORS-78' & MANHATTAN-79'. An embarrassment all round and this makes the film quite hilarious and watch-able, in spite of the dark theme.
