Why Did Karras's Tiny Suddenly Go Along With The Oil Workers?

I realize before anyone reads this it will all be gone.

But it's weird that Alex Karras's character, completely against staying on the island and playing their hand and instead agreeing with his beloved boss Newman to scram before the volcano blows... Why he'd suddenly just follow the banal mob rule...

One minute he's sure about the fact the island has minutes to "live" and the next he's all jovial with his workmates trying to (for a reason I still don't get) sell a rooster to Mr Myagi. Anyhow...

He was following his boss's lead. When the boss said it was alright to stay he went about his business with the other guys.
PS: He wasn't selling the rooster he was going to pit him against Pat Morita's rooster in a fight.
