this is a time capsule

Hey this is a time capsule, i will post it and in 5 years another fan will post a reply on this fun film.

I really like this movie too. Used Cars is funny and original. An early Zemeckis film that lives up to any expectations for a comedy.

reply

I agree it kicks a**

Good old American movie...boobs,Go-Go dancers, language, politically incorrect. They don't make them like they used to...

Normally being a fan of classical cinema; Used Cars is one of my guilty pleasures. I remember seeing it for the first time years ago (around 1990) and the only scene I remembered was the pirate commercial, which, after watching the movie again, is one of it's most memorable (and funniest) scenes (the reaction from the viewers at home is just priceless! KID: Hey look, bare tits! MOTHER: That's DISGUSTING!). Just the sort of movie I can appreciate last thing on a saturday night.

They don't make 'em like they used to.

Some of the American Pie Films, Meet the Parents and my most recent favourite Old School are pretty funny but no where near as good as Used Cars.

Used Cars had the right balance between sleaze and genuine funny bits.

The bit where the customer was haggling over money and said something like "Fifty bucks never killed anyone" just before Jack Warden came into the office and dropped dead on the floor has to be the funniest comedy scene ever.

The dog playing dead on the lot and when they shoot up the opposition caryard during the pirated commercial was also great.

Any other recommendations for old comedies like Used Cars, Caddyshack and Stripes? I love that stuff.

why cant Hollywood write anymore great movies like this?? All you see are great casts wasted on terrible writing. Anybody in Hollywood reading this??!

I dunno if it is the funniest, but it sure ranks up there with them. The private commercials are hysterically funny. Especially when Marshall Lucky blows the sh*t out of those cars. Funny Funny stuff

reply

Some other favorite scenes:
* When Rudy is calculates how long it'll take to earnback the money spent to run for political office vs. the expected annual take from graft and corruption.

* Toby (the beagle) urinating on the mechanic, after he's unable to wake up by just licking his face.

reply

Frank McRae can throw a tantrum better than anybody in cinema. Note 48 Hours and Last Action Hero.

A question I've always had: Did Marshall Lucky actually hit Jim (as Bad Prices) with that rifle? It sure looked like it. Made it even funnier, that he kind of freaked out but went on with the commercial.

This movie is great and it's style probably won't come around again. The gratuitous frontal nudity shots are priceless.

reply

Yeah, that's Penthouse Pet of 1979 Cheryl Rixon. She was a hottie. Real breasts from back in the day.

reply

Yeah, its never mentioned later in the film. Don't know if that was intentional of if they were supposed to show him putting on or taking off a bullett-proof vest. It looked like very dark humor when he looked at his chest wound. haha

reply

Probably my favorite comedy of all time. Kurt Russell once called it a "Disney movie with adult language." So many great scenes. Right from the opening with Rudy luring the guy with the 10 bucks on the fishing line. Jim punching the guy through the windshield was classic.

As someone who recently entered the car business, i was recommended this movie by one of my trainers. It reminds me of Anchorman, but obviously this movie came first. To the younger generation, id describe this one as the "anchorman" for car salesmen. Definitely an amazing movie

reply

Political correctness is boring.

But this movie is funny!!

I love those films, especially "Used Cars"!
Other great films from that time are "Kentucky Fried Movie", "Animal House" and "Vacation".

Cinemajunkie
Remeber when Tobby (the dog) was laying on the back seat of the car and covering his head with his paws in shear terror. As Jeff (Gerrit) jumped that train with his car, to save the car lot.
That dog was amazing through out that film. When Toby played dead so the guy would think he ran him over and buy the car.
In real life that dog was named Peanut.

*ding* Let's keep the party goin'

This is one of my all-time favorite comedies. My dad got this on VHS in the mid '80s and I watched it just about every day for two months. I haven't seen it in so long, and now a movie is coming out called 'The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard' which looks like somewhat of a rip-off of this one. I need to find this DVD!! Anyway, it's funnier than hell, don't miss it.

Yes this is a time capsule and I hope no one will remake this movie at all because it is fine the way it is.

It certainly IS a time capsule. I lived in the Phoenix area until 1990 (Mesa where it was filmed is just to the east of Phoenix) while it was still a fairly decent place to live. Today, you couldn't pay me to live there.

reply

They do not make films like this anymore. If they do it just does not come out the same way like this one did. I loved it. That is not good to hear that Mesa has changed a lot. COOL That it was filmed close by.

I agree, an attempt at a film like this today (R-Rated, etc.) would probably contain a LOT more language and probably additional graphic sex scenes, etc.

When they go "R-Rated" these days, they're not too subtle about it...

Well I think they have tried to remake this to be honest with you because I just saw a movie that was similar to this called The Goods. I was not too crazy with that film at all to be honest with you. They would also drop it down to PG-13 to squeeze in the teenagers to make even more money if they can. That is what they do with a lot of the remakes is drop it down to PG-13.

It really is a time cap - not that Main St. in Mesa, Arizona has changed all too much. The geography, at least. Couldn't pay me to drive in that city now.

reply

yes it most certainly is a time capsule. I was born, raised & lived in nearby Phoenix at the time. In the scene that he missed the bus was very nostalgic to me as I had worked for the city transit at the time & that bus (#304) was still in the fleet for a few more years. Jack Warden has always been one of my favorite actors. I hope they didn't really wreck that '57 Chevy but just made it look like it.
