A little known fact

A little known fact is that for the film, OSCAR winner Rick Baker, very early in his career, created the Alfred E. Neuman mask shown during the opening credits and end.

Dear Fellow UTA Fans

I happen to have this on VHS and it has all the MAD Magazine references on it. Even though it has been misunderstood that they were removed from it but it's inaccurate. They were removed from the film when the movie was shown on cable television. It was changed from "MAD Magazine Presents Up The Academy" to "Warner Brothers Presents Up The Academy" Also, Ron Leibman, who played Major Vaughn Liceman, had his name removed from the movie's cast. I have often wondered why he did that.

Thanks for sharing that.Sincerely Frank R.Schoonover

I don't where you all are from, but I'm in California. 3 years agom the dominant cable company (Comcast) rolled out Video On Demand. We had another cable company called RCN which had VOD about 6 months before Comcast did.

Anyway, on VOD they showed Up The Academy with the Mad Magazine references left in. I've seen the edited version so many time, I know akk the line, butr this was the 1st (and so far only) time I got to see the original. I just wanted to say the Mad refernces changed NOTHING with the storyline. You're not missing anything

I saw this movie as a kid when it first aired on cable & the MAD magazine references were not there. I'm watching it now on DVD, and I was surprised to see Alfred E. Neuman at the beginning.

When I was a kid I saw it first on VHS(wow!) all the Alfred E. Neuman/MAD refrences were intact. The only times I saw it without them were when the movie aired on USA/TNT/TBS on their late night movie lineup.

"No my brotha, you got ta buy yo OWN!"

It's a yes and a no ;-). Mad originally paid to have all references to itself edited out, and that was the version released. Eventually, they were put back in, and that version has also been seen.

Overall, however, they don't add anything to the movie...

I've never seen the film on cable, but the scenes are intact on the VHS and DVD. However the original VHS cover art omits any mention of MAD.
