did the little kid imagine the whole thing??

Keiichi's mom is the only who's ignorant towards the whole alien invasion thing? And Keiichi wondering why Gyaos's attack didn't make the news? Yet in a later scene his mom is talking with that alien lady (the evil one). I've seen this movie dozens of times since childhood and always thought Keiichi was either insane (ala Fight Club) or he dreamt the whole thing up by watching too many Gamera movies and Superman.

(I also wish they used the money spent on the space women effects on new Gamera scenes. Ones that don't show him flying around like a Thanksgiving Day parade float)

In a word, no. It all happened. Gamera officially dies at the end of the movie. It was just lazy writing the examples you provided.

Mysteriously enough, a brand new--albeit awful--looking Gamera suit was constructed for the film. It only appears, however, as the feet trampling past the Godzilla poster. It was however used for posters and stills for the movie.

There wasn't any money spent on the flying effects. It was just the actresses in front of a blue screen, as were Gamera and Spaceship Zanon. No money to shoot that, really.

The more I research and think about it, it's very clear that this isn't a reappearance of the Gamera from the past Showa films. It's more of a reboot. Some even consider the whole movie a dream or in the imagination of Keiichi.

I've also heard that Diamond Entertainment, (one of the companies that distributed the English dubbed versions), didn't include this film in their collection. They went as far as to say Gamera vs. Zigra (1971) was Gamera's last film in the Showa series.

Also, from http://deadshirt.net/2016/08/30/angry-turtle-gamera-super-monster/:

"it’s so clear that this is NOT a reappearance of the Gamera we just saw in seven other movies. It is a reboot, and as such does not depict the death of “the” Gamera. Ultimately this is the least essential Gamera film as a result."
