Why did it end that way?

The ending made no sense at all. [spoiler]Gerfaut must've caught on to who the people were he was dealing with, so why not take the money? They killed so many and got away with it. So, name some ridiculous figure, take the money and walk away. When he didn't ask for any, the government offered him a position and he even turned that down. He couldn't have been that ignorant. He must've knew he couldn't just walk away after that without repercussions.[/spoiler]
