Don't hate me, but I think a reboot would work well

It was a bit rough in the special effects department. It was great when I was young, but an entire generation of kids don't get these stories for the same reason most of us didn't watch movies that were 30-40 years old when we were kids. Add to that the heavy accents and this isn't very accessable to children. I think this is a rare instance of a reboot being appropriate.

Well, maybe, but not likely. The thing that made this movie enjoyable was wit, cleverness, and charm, which were enough to get audiences to forgive the special effects.

Hollywood has been having a hard time coming up with witty, clever, and charming material lately, the knack seems to have been lost.

I have to disagree with the OP. The problem isn't with older movies, which were made with the best effects available at the time—the problem is with viewers unable or unwilling to stretch themselves beyond their digital comfort zone & appreciate those films overall. In this case, it's a film (as noted by Otter's comment) with "wit, cleverness, and charm"—all of which matter far more in the end than special effects.

The special effects of today's favorites of today will be equally outdated before we know it. Will those films hold up for their scripts & atmosphere the way TIME BANDITS does? Or for that matter, the 1940s THIEF OF BAGHDAD. Or the original KING KONG? Those older effects have their own beauty & power, if one is willing to accept them. And they're in service to strong films with strong stories, which is more than can be said about all too many modern films, where special effects are basically all they've got going for them.

I actually hate most computerized special effects. I like the old crappy effects that made you stretch your imagination a bit. There are some special effects these days that are glorious, while so many other movies have effects that just look cartoonish.

reply

I agree that could be pretty good.

The structure of this movie makes it a no brainer for a tv series. They could really stretch this out and have a lot of fun with it.

This has the potential to be awesome. Taika Waititi is a great choice to helm the project.

Seemed like a good fit.

Interesting. Also old news. I wonder if that's still in development. Article mentioning Gilliam attached as producer. He's a little cursed.

reply

Everything pre covid has taken a backseat. Not saying it isn't stuck in development hell, but these are unique times, so it might just be behind everything else that was forced to halt production.

A remake or reboot wouldn't make much sense without Gilliam and other Pythons, and they're old now. Believe it or not, this movie was made for adults, not for kids. If special effects is the only thing you took with you from the story, then I think you'd be much happier with modern cgi-crapfests. Leave old classics to those who can appreciate them.

reply

NO REMAKE! We don't really need to see a team of racially diverse, LGBTQ little people racing about the time-stream reversing the historical oppressive effects of evil white conquerors.

reply

Oh please, you act like there haven't been remakes that improve on the originals. Spare me your elitist views.
