This movie gave me nightmares... (spoiler)

I watched it when I was about 6, and really the only thing I remember is the end when he watches his parents blow up, then the fireman drives away. I used to dream constantly of that scene, only with myself as the kid, and my parents the ones who blew up. It would be the same dream over and over: my parents blow up and the camera pulls away overhead and the credits roll...

I guess even now as an adult, I don't understand the ending and how this is supposed to be a kid's movie. That was seriously the most traumatic movie scene I'd ever witnessed as a kid (in addition to the 3 fingered old lady in Cloak & Dagger)... No matter how bad his parents were, why have them blow up and everyone drive away like it was perfectly normal?

I love this movie, but I agree the ending is pretty *beep* up. Hey kid, your parents are dead, have a nice day, roll credits.

I mean his parents weren't great and ignored him alot, but they were still decent (weren't abusive, fed him, gave him a room, bought him toys, etc)

I think you missed the central theme of the film when you were young. You see, god is a bit of a dick. It's very insightful.

I'd have started with lasers! 8 o'clock! Day one!

I think Gilliam owes you for years of mental anguish. However, a lot of kids want their parents to explode. Don't they?

I saw this film, just recently and I get nightmares about it!
Although I noticed one of the Fire fighters looks like the character Agammemnon.
Hell, I never wanted to see my parents explode, but I guess if your so angry and fed up with them you would probably like to see them go. But unfortunately the Main character has to live with this.

Watch Independence Day, that always cheers me up.

My solution for such anguish is to watch the Godfather films.

Oh my god yes...Years and years of anguish. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.

I remember when I was a kid, we were on some family trip and when we got into the hotel room the movie was playing. We watched at least the last half of the movie. The only thing I remember was the kid and the dwarfs (yeah dwarfs freak me out as much as clowns anyway) running on the walls of the maze. Even now typing it I'm getting the heebie geebies.

Well, it was rated PG. Parents should take ratings seriously, and not assume anything not rated R is okay for their kids.

I was about 9 when this came out and watched it at least a half-dozen times in my Dad's theatre then. I absolutely loved it then and still do- but I never once thought it was a kids' movie!

I always remembered bits and pieces of the film, but most of what I remembered came from the very end, from Evil turning into a giant pin cushion as well as the battle.

But I never forgot that last bit: "Mum! Dad! Don't touch it! It's evil!" And then of course, the disintegration of the parents.

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."
