The final classroom scene

Can anyone tell me their thoughts on the meaning/purpose of the final classroom scene with the die and students running rampant? On first viewing, I had no idea what the purpose of it was. Upon reflection, I thought perhaps it was to show the students that they should do whatever they would like to do, much like Frank does in his off hours. Or did Frank just no longer care about his teaching profession?

and here i thought it was a statement against total anarchy....a realization for peggy that, you can do whatever you want but later there'll be pieces to pick up...and at some point it won't be as exciting as before.

i liked him as a teacher. he just went in dressed as a woman and made it into a lesson!

Comparing the film to the real life of director, writer and actor Frank Ripploh I think that he really doesn't care too much what the other teachers or the principle will think in the final scene.

Ripploh himself was a teacher, never hiding his homosexuality. He outed himself publicly shortly before making the film, almost ending his career as a teacher. It ended anyway because of a liver illness.

The impression I got was to do what you want with the limitation that it not hurt anyone.
(Remember, he did stop the kid who wanted to set fire to the school building.)

My only argument (with the film as a whole) was that he gave absolutely no hint as to how much time had passed between scenes.

The film is constantly juxtaposing conformity and chaos. The classroom is a great metaphor for an environment associated with order and control. In the final scene, it seems his private and professional life merge.

He seems to want his students to relate to his own life experience in his final, self-destructive act.

This is how I saw it.
