It's back on Netlix! Enjoy
I enjoyed the artistry and am glad it is streamed uncut, because the comedy and the tragedy are inseparable. A sensuous sex scene was followed by a clinical examination of Frank's anus, and I don't think he was enjoying that. Warts soon followed by hepatitis - his lifestyle had consequences in his health, work life and relationship.
I first saw this in theatrical release. When AIDS struck I wondered if the actor was affected. Although Frank sees his lifestyle as adventurous there is also a strong subtext of addiction. He needs his risky, exciting cruising life but the consequences grow as well. The contrast between the beginning and ending classroom scenes IMO highlighted how the chaos was catching up with him. Though he was true to himself by the end he looked tired, so tired. Settling down cozily with Bernd whom he truly loved was not in the cards and this theme is universal. Their conflict was not about "gay" relationships but all relationships.
It has stood the test of time, IMO.
