I can highly recommend this 1980 version, Alice Krige is wonderful as Lucy Manette, and the music is mostly very good (the main romantic theme is a little saccharine for my taste)
Strangely I found Chris Sarandon very effective as Sydney Carton, and not so convincing as Charles Darnay.
The live-action marching-drum motif build-up in the last scene becomes the underpinning of a powerful version of the main theme in the soundtrack, very effective.

You may never see my reply, since its only 5 yrs later (!), but you mention a soundtrack version? Was it released as a separate soundtrack album, cassette/CD? Would like to know because my father composed the music, and I've never seen a separate soundtrack version. Thanks.
