For the Americans, Spetters means ....

I'm from the Netherlands and I just wanted to tell all you foreign people who got a chance to check the movie out and wondered what the title meant. No it's not something disgusting as you think some of the scenes in the movie were, 'spetters' actually means something like 'Hunks' or 'Hotties' So a name for good looking outstanding popular people. There, now you know.

'Spetters' was a dynamic, plot-and-character driven drama, but it's still going to be guilty for leaving me traumatized for life! That scene in the underground where the gigolo and the gay guy...you know...it was very horrific! After watching 'Spetters', I couldn't get that scene out of my mind. My sister kept asking me, "Is something wrong?" Oh, well! That's Paul Verhoeven for us! I liked 'Spetters', but this is a film that one cannot watch with one's momma! Too decadent and perverted...but good stuff, nonetheless.

In America, they translated it as: "Hot Shots"

"My shoes cost more than your education." - Jurassic Park 2

In a documentairy Paul explained "Spetters" to have a dual meaning (correct!). One meaning is slang for goodlooking/hot male/female, the other is splashes/splatters.

And in the context of this movie, 'spetters' is what you hear coming from the deep frying pan in the fish and chips stand. Those droplets can burn.

It's also the burning sensation when orange peels are tossed in your eyes.
