So Richard giving up on life is romantic?
Elise gave up on enjoying life but lived to be an old woman. Richard withered away and dies a few days later.

shareProfessor Finney also said that the process takes a lot out of you. And when Richard was pulled back to the present, he was already spent. So he was desperately trying to get back there with "nothing left in the tank" (so to speak). You'd think a good night's sleep would get him back into fighting shape, but I can understand his fixation keeping him awake and maybe that drove him to madness or just a catatonic state.

This is what Jerry sees when he closes his eyes at night: topless Leslie glued to a horse!
Yes! Did you notice the sweat everywhere on him? He was beyond upset, to the point while he was there for about a week, there was no way he would be able to eat or drink. I felt so bad for him. But yes, you are right, he was "spent".
Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!
What? no, him traveling time is NOT what killed him. everyone deals with things differently. he simply did could not get over his heartbreak. its pretty obvious. elise may have moved on, yes, but its clear she never was able to get over him. so to me, whether either of them lived a few days or decades, neither of them were happy and they both longed to be with the other.
shareTo Elise in 1912, Richard wasn't dead, just mysteriously vanished before her eyes. She could hold out hope that she might see him again someday. To Richard in 1980, Elise had indisputably died eight years previous and there was no hope at all of ever seeing her again.
